Really close to ordering iMac 27" - why?

Hello!

I'm currently studying graphic design & communication, so I spend alot of time at my computer. Currently I'm on a pretty high end PC, running win 7 without any problems.

Although I'm starting to lean towards purchasing a 27" iMac. Why?

* Almost everyone in my class are using iMacs or Macbooks etc.
* Every designer I've asked, seen in an interview or heard about, is using a iMac
* My school is filled of iMac's.

Now I would like to ask a couple of things:

1. Why is everyone in the design industry using iMac?

2. Is there a DEFINITE reason for purchasing an iMac if you're working in design?

3. Would it even make sense for me for purchase an iMac, even though I'm on a pretty high-end (well, was high end in late 2008) computer, with a 24" IPS panel from NEC.

4. Any other reasons for purchasing?

5. Please tell me, specificly people in graphic design business: If, when and how it was when you transfered from PC to Mac.

i started using macs after being a big pc guy forever about 5 years ago.. why? couple reasons.. (i mostly write software and do minimal graphic design)

1. great screen
2. textmate (although not original reason i would stay with mac just for this)
3. essentially linux so your development environment is very similar to production.
3. with a mac i dont have to think.. just create.. (most important)

2 years ago. Simple business decision really. I now spend almost no time at all sorting out computer problems compared to when I was running Windows. Extra time working = more money earned.
Also the stability of the OSX system puts me in a better mood as I feel the computer is working for me rather than constantly fighting me! This also makes me more productive although obviously this is difficult to quantify. :D

It is a myth that Mac systems are better "for design". They are better, full stop.

I noticed you're thread.... :)

By no means am I an expert in graphics at all, but that's basically all I do(mostly video editing) in the limited time I can spend on my computer..

As some will confirm here, I had a really hard time getting used to a Mac after doing all my graphics and videos on a PC.... But as several months have passed, I must confess, doing graphics and video editing on my new iMac I'm realizing is like the difference between driving a Honda Civic then getting a Mercedes, well maybe just a Cadillac... When I look back at the graphics & videos I made on my PC, compared to what I've done on my new iMac in just the time span of a few months for both projects, is like night and day, in fact it makes me want to delete some of the projects I made on my PC...

Just a novice's opinion...
 
A few things to consider that are not directly related to the graphics design indusry:

An iMac can run both win 7 and Mac OS X. Technically you could hack Mac OS X on your PC, but to make a long story short, it's a PITA. You have that ability right out of the box with an iMac.

iMac's are practically maintenance free. No reinstalls, defrags, and so on.

Got any viruses, worms, malware, etc? Of course you don't and of course you never will.

You will probably find parity for specific graphic design programs (adobe, et al), but the factors in determing the best platform for your needs shouldn't be limited to a simple laundry list of programs that are available on both Mac OS X and win 7.
 
Well other than the street cred thing ;) what did it for me was the stunning and clear screens, when I switched to Mac I instantlyy picked up quality issues on my Images when post processing I had not previously noticed on window P.C's thus my acceptance rate greatly increased at the microstock Agencies I submit to.....

Best thing I ever did :D
 
a lot of my friends attend
Mica in Maryland
all of the departments seem to have apple products
and most of the students have a apple laptop.
I tend to noticed the screens are great and a lot of the options make it ideal.
