For those who don't know, it's basically a blog that posts links to freeware and shareware for OS X. They think they can now charge $50/yr to use it. Ha! For some links you can get elsewhere.

Here's the email I sent...

Are you serious? Like really serious? There are a MILLION ways for people to find apps. Google, MacUpdate, Download.com, any of the Mac magazine sites.

Plus, it costs NOTHING to host a site on blogger.com. Zero.

Good luck making a couple dollars.

Oh and your site is busy as hell anyway. Why do you need to tag EVERY post with Mac Apps, Apps For Mac, Best Mac App, Best Mac Apps, Best Mac Download, Best Mac Downloads, Best Mac Downloads.....

No one is searching your site for that. Maybe "games, FPS", etc.

If you'd like me to consult you and show you how to promote this site and make money, I'll take a small % in exchange. (sarcastic there)

Here's his reply. Oh and anyone that says they are PRESIDENT of a blog... well that tells you about his ego!

I normally don't respond to people like you Russ, but I am going to make a few comments since you know NOTHING about what you are talking about when it come to SEO tactics, how Blogger works, or ANYTHING about our site!

Blogger will NOT take a site that moves 5.7 terabytes of data. 1,500-1,700 people per hour x 24, each downloading 2.9 applications a day. Several people a day download over 100 applications, since they just got a Mac!

Please do me a big favor and go find your apps on Google, MacUpdate, Download.com, since people like you, I will NOT miss on the site at all.

I know exactly what people are searching the site for because a have Masters Degree in Computer Science.

I purchased all the tools I would need to collect data - before I even started, so I would know exactly what my users do: what they searched for, where they came from, how long they stayed, what they looked at, how long they stayed and where they went when they left. I know their age, income, number of kids, education level and much more. That is how we became the fastest growing Mac Freeware site on the net in 17 months, with a 15% growth rate a month. We have OVER 55,000 inbound links from people that have put OUR link on their site.

Go to a site like websitegrader.com and compare us to say MacUpdate and see which site has a higher website grade? And all of it was done with a father and son team, not a large Corporation.

You are the kind of person that knows everything. While you are at websitegrader.com compare ANY of your sites to OURS and see how the grades compare.

I will guarantee you that you will not even be in the same ball park. You will still be in the parking lot.

There is NOTHING you could possibly teach me, just reading your email tells me that much.

I am extremely happy you are leaving Russ.

I was always taught not to argue with ignorance so..........time is up for me!

I am marking your email address as SPAM now, so anymore emails you send WILL be consider SPAM and end up in my trash!

Have a good day Russ and enjoy the other sites. Don't need or want your help or to even have you on my site!

Sincerely,

Randy Collins
President

I more or less sympathize with Randy, he creates a service and then gets an angry customer ranting and flaming primarily because he takes issue with the price.

No, even worse. He created a site that he allows users to use for free, obviously one that you liked if you had the nerve to send off that email before he went to a subscription based model.

Meh. The industry parlance for your e-mail is what we call a "nastygram." You should know better than to behave like that.

As for "Randy," I have no idea how he's going to get anyone to subscribe to a service that is offered on many other websites for free (and which, honestly, I've never even used and of which I've hardly ever heard)... if he really has that kind of traffic, he should have no trouble generating advertising revenue. I somehow doubt his plan to be a charging service will last -- he will either be forced to backtrack or just shut down altogether. So if it's any consolation, if he still exists in six months, you'll probably be back in free.

None of that excuses your behavior, however.

Good on Randy

I have just paid my $50 dollars on the back of his reply. That's how to deal with abusive 'customers'.

:)

Cheers

What's the bid deal with the reply email you received. It seems like a normal response to somebody who's trying to tell a company how to run things.

Honestly I would check the site and rarely download anything. He's not offering very much and charges $50/yr. He's got plenty of competition that charges nothing.

Plus he's pissing off customers (yes I was a customer... before), by putting a million "tags" which are useles... just trying to help his google rating.

If he knew how to run it properly he would be making a TON of money. Now he'll make almost nothing.

Wow I can't believe people are siding with him. He acts like he's Mr. Know-it-all.

It sounds like you're the know it all. You're trying to tell someone who has a business how to run things. How much experience do you have? Even if you have a lot of experience, it still gives you no right to talk to him like that.

Maybe if you had worded the email a little bit better.

Yeah the email with a little blunt and direct. But some people need to be told how it is. Sorry if it offended him. It's called customer service.

If he had a publicly owned company I'd bet against it and sell short right now.

Regardless of what you think about the emails, you have to agree there's no way people will pay $50 for that site.

Well, you wrote an email telling the guy he had no idea what he's doing. If you're that good, why don't you create a new service, and take away his customers? If you're not happy with his services, simply don't buy them. There's no need to tell him he's ignorant in his policies.

And just because one customer leaves, you think he's going to lose all sorts of money? It seems to me he's losing $50 over the course of a year. Considering you hardly downloaded anything, and assuming he's getting paid for click-throughs, which is likely, I wouldn't say he's losing much.

Also, when I went to that site, it wasn't on blogger.com. I'm not sure why you think it is, and that is just more ammo against you.

I can hardly believe you were trying to help, considering the email you wrote, which seems more like a Mr. Know-It-All attitude.

i have to say i side with coolOSXapps here. they offer a service and they try to make some money of it. that's absolutely fair. i personally think $50 is too much but that is my choice to pay or not. i wish him good luck and i hope he's successful especially in this economy where people don't want to spend money.
