Really? (trouble with limewire)

I am a student that uses limewire pro to transfer data around our class, without the hassle of converting it into a torrent, and giving people choices of when to download large files (e.g videos of molecular structure in chemistry).

My music is legit, and I don't have any apps I would have to pay for.

After experiencing random shutdowns on my macbook, I swapped the battery with my brother's and the problem continued. I then reinstalled OSX, just incase I had messed about with it and ruined something. I took it to my local genius bar, but as soon as the genius saw it he told me 'limewire is an unstable java program, it is causing the problems'. I considered uninstalling limewire, and seeing if the problems continued, but this would not help as the shutdowns can happen twice in a day, or once in two weeks, and I cannot go that long without it.

Could there be any truth in this, or was he trying to persuade me to get rid of limewire as he thinks I am using it for illegal purposes. Any help would be kindly appreciated.

I've found LimeWire to be pretty dodgy too, not to mention a big resource hog. I use Acquisition, still a hog but it's stable and pretty to boot.

Yeah, i would agree with the genius bar. Limewire is the reason i got a virus on my imac, although it was running Mac OS 9 at the time.

Limewire absolutely sucks. Do not use that piece of crap. With all the knowledge that is out there and all the excellent alternatives, I am honestly surprised by how many people still use it.

Thanks, after careful consideration (for about 0.000003792 seconds) after reading your posts, I uninstalled limewire on my mac, and decided to keep it on my PC (its crappy enough anyway), is there any reason to re-install OSX or is it stable enough to go on as normal?

do you have to pay for Acquisition? i saw somethiing about a single user is $17.99 and family pack is $25.99 -- what is that for?

Well, random shutdowns are a problem WITH the macbooks. Nothing in limewire to cause the problem (in fact I've never even RAN a java cocoa app on my Macbook). I understand why the geniuses tiptoe around things (because they're use to dealing with dumb users) but when a customer brings in a Mac with a problem that is similar to others of the same model then you should be blaming a common factor to all, not some random 3rd party app.

sheesh, get it sent in - I can't even use my book because I need reliability.

after just under 2 months of having my macbook, it started to turn itself off...
I did actually install limewire b4 the random shutdowns took place.. then i uninstalled limewire and the shutdowns still happened so i called applecare, they told me to do a few things like reset pmu and pram, but still no luck so eventually i sent it to get repaired.. now (touch wood) i have no problems.. But im not really sure if limewire is the culprit.. because ive seen many cases of macbooks randomly turning themselves off and limewire not being involved.

If your looking for a free stable, easy to use file sharing app, Acqlite does the job.

Any time I have Limewire on my macbook I just get rid of it after an hour or so. If i keep it on any longer the computer eventually slows down.

Limewire is a perfectly legitimate program and shouldn't cause your computer to crash. It's a cross platform app coded in Java. It's only a vector for viruses via your downloads, so be selective. If you don't have Limewire start at login, and you still have difficulties, chances are it isn't Limewire.

By the way, that is a great use for P2P. I have done the same for collaborative sharing in classes, basicly makeing a very easy to use WAN. (Though media names have to be really specific.)

I like the Gnutella P2P protocols and it was one of the first for OSX to use them. This said there are other P2P programs out there, but I like Limewire enough to help pay for it's development via the pay for "pro" features. Good codeing and noble efforts deserve to supported.

I know I said I would'nt really be able to tell, but I have been using Acqlite since it was suggested, and fingers-crossed-touch-wood no shutdowns.

Its a nicer program anyway, less of a hog, and feels more mac-ish. Thanks for your comments, and this is definitely a program I will reccomend to other mac users.
