What's the chances of this happening? Apple maybe one day release a similar product with a proper OS, or maybe we get to jailbreak this iPad and get SL on it?

I could really put something like that to solid use, especially a 3G one, though would need some 'lite' versions of some software..

I wouldn't use an iPad with OSX on it without a bluetooth keyboard. Bear in mind that right now all the OS X install dvd's are for Intel and the iPad is an A4 (Arm core) CPU. Apple has to break down and decide to port OS X to the A4 before there is any chance of this happening. Still, if screen sharing is supported I'd consider that "good enough". I've got enough Macs around to screenshare into that I don't care if the iPad happens to have OS X on it. In fact, I'd go so far as to say I'd rather NOT have full OS X on a mere 16 gig of SSD.

When I'm using an iPad the way Apple intended (90+ percent of the time), I think I'd be quite happy with iPhone OS. When I'm using an iPad to vnc into another OS, I'd want a bt keyboard and I suppose I'd even want a mouse in addition to the touchscreen.

The iphone os will slowly be converted to ipad os. The ipad os will gain features that of the mac book pro os. It may take 2 to 3 years or sooner. Apple is crafting the iphone os to become a dominant platform, but it takes time. A tablet form requires multi-touch, but I also think it needs motion technology, voice controller, too. I saw a patent for bezel touch interface. I think the 3rd gen will be totally awesome!

I still don't understand why people say 'proper OS'.
iPhone OS is a proper OS, it exists therefore it is proper.

I'll be perfectly happy with VNC and RDP solutions, if Apple would allow Back to my Mac functionality that would be pretty cool. A desktop OS does not work on a touch device.

All things are proper because they exist. Thanks for that insightful bit of philosophy, I couldn't have done better myself if I was 16 years old ans smoked my first joint

That Axiotron is looking great.. going to youtube around for some videos of it in operation. I don't doubt that the iPad's OS will greatly evolve, it's just I'm in the market for something sooner rather than later..

OS X is in no way modified to run on a tablet.
I mean, it would literally be a nightmare to try and press all those small buttons. You can just forget about the menu bar, that'll be almost unusable.

So, I wouldn't ever use OS X on a tablet computer, unless it's 20" +

I really don't see where people are coming from when they want OS X on the iPad so bad.

I agree with the statement that iPhone OS is a "proper OS", albeit that it's more eye-candy than grunt.

Though I don't want to run Final-Cut or Adobe CS4 on a 10 inch hand held.

If I fork out for a iPad (I probably will get one for the wife) it will be for mail and browsing on the sofa... Yes a luxury that isn't necessary, but oh well... and she might at last keep her mitts of my iPhone.

I can happily VNC on to my iMac from my iPhone using Jaadu VNC from anywhere in the world. Just set up VPN to your own router and use it as normal. Works great from another WiFi network. Slow over 3G of course but good enough to perform the odd task or two. The iPad will be even better for this!
