It’s a long weird story that has seen me sending in the MacBook to apple support several times, but they are also stumped. So hoping others can share their experience… I’m sure I’m not the only one using Adobe software (Acrobat, PS, AI, CC) on my MacBook, so wondering if anyone faces this issue or their computers work just fine and it’s just something I did that I can correct so it will work fine.

I have a MacBook Pro 13” that I got in May 2020. It was working fine until some time in Oct. I don’t recall that I did anything special, maybe renewed my Adobe subscription around that time. What started happening was, when I shut down my computer at night, having been fully charged at 100% from being plugged in, the next morning the battery would be drained to 0% and refuses to turn on until I plug in for 15 mins or so. I started trying different things, like removing all my USB-C adapters that link to my monitors. It still drains after being shut down. Now, the best part is, if I do NOT shut down, like just close the lid and let it sleep, the battery next morning is 95-96%, which is perfectly fine. So something is draining my battery specifically when the MacBook is shut down, which is weird cos they should all be shut down. Apple recommended to change the MacBook battery but I could not survive without my laptop for work for the few days downtime during that period, so I chose to hold off till I could.

So along the way, I updated my macOS to Monterrey. And it crashed my computer, like I could not even turn it on after I had installed Monterrey. So I had to send in to apple support who did their stuff and replaced my top case, which includes changing the battery. However, the issue of battery draining when shut down still persisted.

So I brought it in again to apple support and this time they changed the logic board as well. They tested that it worked fine but when I brought home and installed my software, the battery drains when shut down again. I brought it back to apple support and they suggested to try to isolate which software could be causing the issue, since I could not afford the downtime without my laptop again at that point. So this is what I did after I reformatted my computer to experiment:

1st day - did not install any new apps or software, shut down, battery was relatively full next day
2nd day - installed Microsoft office apps, shut down, battery was also good next day
3rd day - installed other apps that I used for work, battery was also good next day
4th day - installed Adobe Acrobat only, came with the Creative Cloud bloatware as usual, but not PS and AI; next day, battery drained

This time round, I reformatted my computer again but my battery still drained next day when shut down.

Has anyone encountered this issue? Or you have the same laptop, and using Adobe, but don’t have this issue? Please let me know how I can resolve this issue. I do need to use the Adobe software for work. Appreciate any help or advice. Thank you.

Hi!
Can suggest you check System Preferences –> Battery –> Make sure that options like Power Nap and Wake for network access in Battery and Power Adapter chapters are disabled.
Also, check the schedule chapter, maybe there are a set of triggers
Otherwise, boot your Mac into Safe Mode, but it to Sleep and see what will happens

Hi, thanks. Yes power nap was turned off under battery, have also turned it off under Power Adapter. Will monitor again tonight.

There's nothing in schedule, everything is all off.

Also, plot twist, Apple reformatted my computer, and I did not install Adobe this time, but my battery still drains.

I'm just wondering, even though my laptop was not plugged in, there is the plugged in indicator. So maybe it activated power nap and it just kept running even though it was on battery? So somehow the computer thinks it's plugged in even when it is not?

I have the same laptop (2 thunderbolt ports) but never heard of anything like that.
Pretty embarrassing Apple couldn‘t be of any help getting to the bottom of this, even with your strategic approach and observations.
Although it seems unlikely to change anything, you could test the command to disable auto-boot when opening the lid:
sudo nvram AutoBoot=%00

edit: And you could disable darkwake, unfortunately I can‘t find the command right now.
I disabled it to keep my MacBook from connecting to my WiFi every few hours.
Again, no obvious correlation, but couldn‘t hurt to try anyway.
