Evening Apple guys and gals!

Here's an interesting one for you...

New iPhone SE 2nd gen, had it for about a month and a half now, and very happy with it so far. I can even get over the lacklustre battery life, as the way I use my phone isn't really impacted by this. However...

It's recently started to make an audible, mechanical "click" sound whenever an app opens which uses the Camera (i.e. Camera, WhatsApp, FaceBook Messenger etc. etc.). Even stranger, if I restart my phone, the problem goes away for a couple of days (restarted Thursday, sound went, back again today) but then eventually returns. If it was serious physical fault, this surely wouldn't happen, right? Couldn't say how long it's been happening for though, as I thought it was a feature of a specific app. until I noticed that it wasn't. Has it been happening since I installed iOS 14? Not sure.

Spoke to Apple Support last week, and the chap ran diagnostics on my phone. Couldn't find anything wrong and suggested I take it to the Apple Store for examination, but I'm wary of doing this right now for a couple of reasons (a). being work, and b). being COVID), so I'm curious to know if anyone else has heard of this issue/knows the cause of this issue/has any suggestions as to the cause of this issue. I'm wondering if it affected iPhone 8 users too, as I understand it it's the same camera setup in this new brick? Next step will be a factory reset I think.

The phone is still under warranty, so I've no compunction against returning it if it *IS* faulty, barring the obvious environmental considerations (it works fine, why create extra waste) and the pain in the neck of having to do it.

Any thoughts and advice greatly appreciated!

Ta!

If this were normal, we would have heard about it from one of the millions of iPhone 8 or SE2 users on iOS 14. I would make an appointment with the Apple Store.

Yes I have it on iOS14.0.1. It was around in iOS13 disappeared in iOS14.0 and came back. Its apparently something to do with the OIS, can be fixed with software it seems.

Thanks both, appreciated!

I've been onto technical support with John Lewis today and they want to service the phone. On the basis that it's under warranty and they'll collect it from me, I've decided to go ahead. If it's a hardware fault, it'll be fixed. If it's a software fault, it won't be. But either way, I'll have peace of mind.

Looks like it's back to the old SE for a week or so!

I am very sure it is a software issue. But let me know what happens!

Will do!

As the phone is being collected until next week (at my request I should add!), I'm trying an experiment this weekend whereby I've done a full reset/iOS reinstall via Finder. I want to see if refreshing all the software makes a difference!

So! As promised, an update!

My phone was literally just delivered 10 minutes ago; I've yet to open the box or set it up, but the service slip states all tests passed and no faults found. Which is very reassuring, but somewhat frustrating, as no definitive cause identified.

Interesting to note that old SE Gen. 1 has been up-and-running for about two weeks and is also running iOS 14 and shows no sign of the same fault.

Have exactly the same problem, after restart it is gone for some time

Thanks! It was gone for a bit until a recent update. Now the clicking is back. In a weird way I actually like it. I accidentily open my camera from lockscreen at least once a day so the audible click is nice... (I do not have screen off timer so this drains battery like crazy).
