Reasonable CPU temperature for MBP?

Hi, I've owned a reasonably early built 15" MBP for 6 months now, was built in week 10 of 2006 I think. Never had any problems with it, and though it does get warm when in use. The parts that I touch like the keyboard and armrest are fine, the bit above the keyboard gets rediculously hot, though I figure I never touch there anyway). I haven't minded the warmth, can be a benefit on a cold day! Anyway, I installed Temperature Monitor today, interested to see how hot the processor cores get. They idle around 40-50 Celsius, though at the moment I'm encoding a movie into H.264 in iSquint, and there're up at around 82 Celsius (around 175 F for Americans). This seems to be pretty rediculously hot, I'm wondering if this is reasonable for a 15" MBP? The fans run constantly, though very slowly, and I can barely hear them, and almost never spool up unless in Windows. Does anyone with a good knowledge about the innards of MBPs know?

Btw, it's a 2.0Ghz the 256Mb video card and the standard 100Gb 5400rpm drive.

Those temperatures look fine Mine sounds exactly the same.

Those are pretty normal temperatures by all reports. Mine runs cooler though, idles around 35 and maxes out at 75. I have a week 23.

Anyway, I installed Temperature Monitor today, interested to see how hot the processor cores get.

Where did you get the temp. monitor? Is it for MB too? I tried to get the CoreDuo Temp widget but I can't find where you download it.

Mine idles around 98-101F and even when pushing it ive never seen it go above 155F. I'm not sure what week it is, but its a CTO and it just arrived on Monday of this week.

Around 50C is average for my MacBook, 20's when idle. When pushed above 70, my fan seems to come on and it will fall back down to 50s.

Your temps are quite normal, I'd say even low. Which is good.
My MBP (1.83 w13) idles at about 60C, but max out around 82C as well.

I also own a MBP and have similar temperatures. I had a logic board exchanged a few weeks ago because of the whine and it did not affect the temperatures measured with the widget. Idleing at around 60 and up to around 80 under full load. My imression is though that the ouside of the case is hotter since the logic board exchange. It used to be really warm before and now is really hot. I never measured the temperature though.

Mkay, cool, thanks for the replies guys, I guess I was being paranoid
Searching around a bit more, I notice that it says something about the 'defined operating temperature' of the chips is from 0 - 100 degrees Celsius, and mine's well within that!

same here, although mine idles at a lower temp when on battery

My MBP (1.83ghz) idles at around 55, but thats with browsing only. If I do intensive work, it can go up to around 78-80.

Running at 72*C right now. Dashboard for some reason was eating up my proessor cycles, been at 50% use for about an hour now....

If you really get worried about the heat, buy a cooling pad. They are fairly cheap nowadays, and do a good job.
