In most (if not all) of EU countries (not sure about th situation in the US), there is a 3GS shortage...This has been lasting for the past 4 weeks.
Is the shortage due to increasing demand Apple did not forecast or is that because they are upgrading the 3GS (bugs, overheating issue, etc...)?

If i get a 3GS in a few days, how do i know whether or not it is the latest version?

Thanks

They haven't made enough iPhones to go around.

You'll know it's the latest version because the 3G S is the latest version. You can verify that it's a 3G S by opening the camera application and looking at the video recording capability.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7A341 Safari/528.16)

The shortage is due to lack of units. Apple are not revising the 3GS.

Sure i know the 3GS is the latest version, i was just wondering if they had plans revising the 3GS. The other day i have asked one of the French iPhone provider (Orange) and the genius told me there was a lack as Apple was taking care of the overheating issue and some bugs that needed fixes so once they re-start shipments it will be a new 3GS rev...is that pure speculation, genius fantasy, i do not know but i then called Apple and they obviously told me the shortage was due to the high demand they can not face...

Where is the truth...high demand? Apple revising 3GS? Both of them...go wonder...

I get the feeling Geniuses like making stuff up so they sound more important!

Imagine the number of people discovering a rattle/yellow screen on their 3GS if a new rev came out!

What I do know is that some of the newer built handsets have a green sticker on them, indicating that minor hardware changes have been made.

This however, does not affect the current stock status.

I've never heard anything about the green sticker on an iPhone before...but if that's the case, I hope my replacement I'm waiting for from Rogers has one for sure!!

They've used the green sticker before, are you sure it's not turquoise?

There is no shortage in the US. In fact, quite the opposite. Check out the US store availability checker:

Does Apple have to make special versions for Europe? (I thought not, but I really don't know.)

No special version needed in EU I beleive so still I am unsure why they would not fullfil the huge load of backorder while the US seems to be well served/stocked...
I can't wait the day they will answer my call saying "yes, we received some 3GS" :)

We know 3GS is the latest version but I wa refering to revision which is different... You can have several different revision on a same product version.

In the case of the iPhone, any revisions made for this model (assuming revisions are even made at all) won't be of any real significance. This has been been proven through two product cycles already.

If you're obsessed with waiting for product revisions, then there is simply no point in getting an iPhone at all.

Look at it this way: the iPhone comes with a warranty. If there's a problem that develops on your phone that gets fixed in a new revision of the same model, and it affects you, then you get it exchanged. Problem solved.

The 3G S shortage issue is just to make the new iPhone look good as Apple have shut off its core iPhone customers, 3G Users, through ridiculous carrier upgrade fees. Its an artificial shortage if you ask me. If all the 3G users that wanted the 3G S could reasonably upgrade Apple wouldn't have to do this as demand would be incredible.

Take O2 here in the UK as example, gleefully claiming 3G S sales surpassed 3G a few days after announcing their silly upgrade fees for us 3G owners.

That's what I think at least ;)

I live in Finland and have been waiting now 6 weeks for my 3GS... losing my patience :apple:

i have been waiting for my iphone 3gs for a week from the Apple HongKong store. it won't arrive until another week.

I was told by someone in the O2 shop that it's a "limited stock item". I think, since it's a phone that costs more than a lot of laptops, they are just not making loads.

Apple delivered mine the next day though when I ordered from their online store.
