I am due for an upgrade from my 6s and was excited to get an XS when they announced it, then XR was announced and I decided to wait a month for me to check it out and actually see whether extra $250 is worth spending.

I was super excited to check out XR, but now I placed an order for XS and I think I made a great choice. Nothing has to do with paying the premium, if you get the xs to impress people that you have a better phone than them, then I am wishing you good luck in life. It is just a phone in the end and you got to have bigger things in life to focus on than who has the coolest phone (unless you’re a kid ;) )

Here’s what really made me decide on XS over XR after spending 30 minutes at the apple store trying to decide.

1. First thing is display, I really did not see difference to be honest with you all, so that win goes to both phones

2. Size difference... I did not know that the XR would be not just noticeably heavier, but also thicker and the bazel seemed to me going much further into the display. With case, the XR will be another story.

3. I have a 6S and I tried to hold the phones and the XS fit my hands just perfectly while XR is just bigger.

4. The price difference is worth it to me personally and just a few significant features to me outweighs the extra $250, even though I am a college student, but I can afford it.

It might not be very serious reasons, but to me I believe the size and weight just killed it, although I really loved the red, coral, and every color and would get an XS red if there was one.

Display - Really do not see much of a difference and that wasn't a deal breaker to me.

They are both great phones and you won’t go wrong going with any of them as long as it fits your needs and I keep my phones for 3-4 years, so I hope this one will serve its purpose.

Placed an order for the XS gold and pretty excited.

Good choice. They're all good choices.
It seems that those who used normal sized iPhones find the XR & Max too big, while those who always used the Plus phones in the past prefer the bigger Max or XR over the XS.

I liked the size of Apple’s 4.7” phone so naturally I went with the X/Xs size and couldn’t be happier with the increase of screen size plus getting rid of the bezels.. Glad you took the time to compare the phones and picked the one the suits you best..

Just did the same, not interested in huge phones anymore, after 6,7,8 Plus. Picked up my white X, setting it up now. I do miss the red color though.

Whatever choice someone makes with reasons for that choice is a good one. I have a 6s and my XR was delivered today. It's obviously larger, but I'm fine with the size of the larger phone.

Enjoy your new XS, Christian 5G.

For me the Xs is really perfect, slightly larger than the iPhone 8 it replaced. I went with white to get the polished SS band. The screen and camera and the better build material do make a difference to me. I feel the extra 250 is money well spent. That said I will most likely keep longer than phones before it. For many the Xr fits their needs and budget. It's a strong product and I do think Apple will sell quite well and will make a smaller version at one point.

Thanks for writing a well thought out post without any hyperbole or uncessary rhetoric!

I landed in the exact same position as you, for the same reasons... I too am coming from a 6s, bought on launch day, that served me well - and still has a lot of life left in it (will hand it down to the kids).

I wanted to love the Xr as the price was more “reasonable” and the benefits of the Xs are just not that important to me. However, the size of the Xr was just too big. The Xs is so close to my 6s in overall size if felt just right.

It sickens me to pay what im about to pay, but this will easily be a three to four-year phone for me so I can justify it. And if I don't love it, in 14 days I’ll just go with an 8.

As others said, all these are solid devices. But if the trends I'm seeing in smart phones continues, my next phone in 3-4 years might just be an Android. The competition is getting really close (IMHO).

Best wishes everyone,

I went with the xs just based on size alone. I dont like huge phones and the xs is the best out right now based on size for me. Love my phone, loved the X before it.

My wife got the xs max but is switching out to the XR, she doesn't care about latest and greatest. With the XR being close to the same in most respects, screen and camera being the biggest difference she wasn't too worried about it and decided she would rather save money. lol

I think the Xr is a brilliant phone, it manages to be 95% of an Xs at much more reasonable price.

I got an Xs because it felt a little more premium and I could afford it.

I have to eat crow for a few days in my house and on MR. I took the XR back for the XS. I know, I know - I even wrote a nice post here about how the XR is great, which it is indeed great, and commented on several others about the great screen and size of the phone and the value of the XR series.

But I too come from the 6-8 line of phones and I just could not come to grips with the size of the XR. Add a case of some sort and its just too darn big for me and my lifestyle. So I put my head down, went into the store and returned it for the XS. I was so excited to save some money, which I guess I did a little by getting the XS instead of the XSM. There is no way I could have made the XSM work for me, just not used to the plus sized phones at all.

XS seems just a tad bigger than the 7, so that is nice - but it is a heavy device. I noticed that right away. I think I will miss the battery life of the XR, but I didn’t have a problem with the 7, so I guess what I don’t know, I won’t miss.

I’m glad I am able to return the phone and get something that works a bit better for me and my pockets and hands. I don’t see much of a difference in the screen, but the size of the phone is what got me. Now that I’ve spent the afternoon and evening with this phone I know I made the right choice. The XR is an amazing phone, and will be for tons of people. I think Apple really hit it out of the park with that device.

Anyway, keep enjoying your phones. I’ll be back to post about my new one in 3-4 years I hope. I would like to use this one for a good long time.

95%!? the OLED vs LCD is a 40% difference right there.. lol That’s what you look at 95% of the time..o_O:D

I was considering XR, especially after all these "eye fatigue" comments about OLED displays, but in the end will try XS. I don't like big phones and XS looks like natural upgrade after 4.7".
