Can anyone give me advice on what maintenance steps are necessary on an IMac. I have one mainly for Itunes and to rip movies to Apple TV but I'm not sure there is anything I should be doing to optimize its performance. I've read about issues downloading movies from Tivo being impacted by the memory cache and have heard suggestions about clearing the memory occasionally but i'm not that sophisticated of a user and was wondering if there were any of these type things I should be doing with my Apple. Thanks.

You don't need to do any maintenance by yourself - the OS mostly does it automatically. Once a month leave it running during the night so the OS scheduled maintenance programs get a chance to run. That too is not strictly necessary.

Leave the computer running? I rarely power down the computer in general so I guess I'm covered?.

I mean don't let it go to sleep - OSX by default at least on my MBP, goes to sleep when not in use - so you can go to system preferences->Energy saver and click Never sleep for one day in a month. That should be good enough - remember to revert the sleep setting to its original afterward.
