Reboot issue

Hi guys,

A strange problem cropped up yesterday-i have a riMac running el Cap.

Now, when I go to reboot, the computer chimes, then gives a black screen for a LONG time. Eventually, it gets to the Mac OS login screen. I tried to get it to boot into Windows 10, without success (also, holding down the option key for so long wasn't fun).

Any ideas? Everything worked fine up til now. The only thing that happened yesterday was that I deleted stuff from the desktop, as my startup drive was full. I have about 500GB free now, and I'm sure I didn't delete anything critical.

Try booting into "Verbose" mode, press cmd+V on startup, this might show you where it is stalling.

I ended up deleting several login items, resetting PRAM, and SMC, and finally, deleting some preference panes left over (NTFS stuff) that seemed to solve the issue.

I also made a bootable el Cap USB stick in case I had to start over. Hopefully I won't need it

Also, check your Login items, I had a few missing shortcuts which made the login window take forever to load.

So I noticed that if I unplug my USB hub (which worked without a problem with ALL beta versions of El Cap up 'til now) the computer starts up ALMOST as fast as it used to.

I checked my login items, and deleted a few that were unnecessary, but this hasn't helped. I read over on the Apple Dev forum about 3rd party kexts causing issues, but I don't know how to pursue that-there is a script that can move any labeled by El Cap as "unsupported" to a new folder, but I have been unable.

I'm hoping I can fix this, rather than reinstall El Cap, but will do that if needed. I am assuming I can keep my BootCamp partition if I do end up having to go that route?

Any advice gratefully accepted!

El Cap will remove any unsigned kexts automatically.
