OS Neutral reccommend a game for me-favs are fallout 3,dishonored,farcry,tombraider, DE HR

really struggling to find a game to play, ideally from the tons i have, rather than spending money.

i like good graphics, freedom and a story. it doesnt have to be FPS or RPG, as long as its good, not too complicated to start with, and has a good story.

i have lots of games in my steam library, a lot of which are older 'classics' which didnt seem to have aged well. ideally id like to play some of these but none of them are grabbing me.

i have sitting in my steam library but mostly not downloaded:
Anno 2070-loved the earlier games but on first glance this seemed too 'save the earth' more judgemental and less fun
ALan Wake
Batman arkham asylum / city
bioshock 1, 2
bioshock infinite - dont get the clamour for this. the graphics are amazing but its so simplistic, point gun, shoot. search, find coins and salt.
company of heroes
crysis 2
dead island
dead space
skyrim - i want to love this, i craved for it when my mini wasnt powerful enough, but ......i know it looks and feels like fallout but i hate all this dragons and stuff....
empire/rome/napoleon total war
endles space
europa universalis 4

far cry 2 - played these the wrong way round, should have played 2 before 3, 2 now looks very blocky and bad graphics.
just cause 2 - see far cry 2. also doesnt seem as free roaming as fc 3.
la noir- look lovely but first play seems so slow...

If you like a story and freedom, and you don't like dragons...somebody recently pointed out to me "Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines," and OMG, it was exactly what I needed. I even listen to the soundtrack incessantly.

You may want to wait and see what others say about what is on your list & you own, already...VTMB is $19.95 on Steam, and unplayable without a fan-made patch (they are up to 9.1 now). You know the game must be good when fans have kept it alive for almost 10 years...

Well, I think we might have semi-similar tastes. Dishonored and DX: HR are probably my two favorite AAA games of this generation. Didn't like Tomb Raider, though, I thought the story was atrocious and the gameplay monotonous. Ditto with Far Cry (the first one).

From your list, I suggest going with the Witcher games. Although, you say you don't like dragons, so I'm not sure how much you like fantasy. There *are* dragons, but the tone of the Witcher games is very different than something like D&D, it's darker and more "realistic." The worldbuilding is superb, you can tell it's based on novels. The combat in the first is not that good, but stick with it.
Also, I don't know how much freedom matters to you, but they are not open world games, you are following a plot (although in the second game the plot branches at one point, which is pretty neat.) The third game is promising a strong narrative within an open world, which I think is almost impossible to pull off, but we'll see...

To echo the other poster, I have heard amazing things about Bloodlines. It's essentially Deus Ex with vampires. The original Deus Ex is my second favorite game of all time so I really need to get around to it. If there's another game not on your list I'd recommend, it's Fallout: New Vegas. For me, the story and characters are much more interesting than F3.

BTW, regarding Anno 2070---I don't understand why saving the earth can't be fun, but you can be a ruthless capitalist if you want.

cheers cougar, interesting answer. done fallout NV, loved it. i did play bloodlines years ago when it first came out, was a weird mix of great story rpg with boring fighting but i enjoyed it. might try it again.

i do like freedom to wander but then in tomb raider and to an extent Deus Ex HR it was limited at times, i just like to wander in good graphics, kill people, sneak, and pickup things that surprise and delight me.

might try ANNO 2070 again, part of the problem is the windows tax, the best games are in windows but it has to be really great to be worth restarting, messing up my plex streaming etc....


one game i really want to play more of is Max Payne 3, the mac version just seems so slow and jumpy, I'm tempted to download the pc version but its 20 gigs

As long as you never talk to Jarl Balgruuf in Whiterun, you will never see any dragons. Right after the beginning sequence when you escape from Helgen, and then go to Riverwood, and the shop owner asks you to retrieve his dragon claw from Bleak Falls Barrow: just return the claw to him after you find it, instead of "finishing" the dungeon and locating the Dragon Stone. The game will not spawn any dragons until you return to Whiterun with the Dragon Stone.

My second playthrough was as a dragon-less sneaky archer / assassin, and I had a blast!

but does the game have a bit of a light side? fallout 3 / NV had intrigue, humour, grittiness. and good weapons too.

You mentioned loving Fallout 3. Well, you do know that Wasteland 2 is now out for OSX, right? I'm surprised none of the other posters mentioned it already. Wasteland 2 is the spiritual successor to Fallout 2/3.

is it a step forward from fallout 3 or a step back though?

i loved fallout 3/NV as much for the story and the choices as the graphics and shooting, wasteland 2 looks a bit primitive game wise but if the story is as involved then ill try it.



part of me though would like to batter through some of the games on the list, damn steam sales

so far, an hour or so of playing and its really not grabbing me.

not sure i like the 4 diff players idea, means you don't get so attached to your guy.

and the graphics are so 1990s, and the awkward angles mean half the time you can see things due to the angle and then when you spin round you get confused as to what direction you came from, as it all looks the same. and i just keep finding i kill everyone then wander around aimlessly thinking I'm missing something.
