Can I recieve texts and send texts on my iPad via my Nexus 5?
Preferably with notifications.

Is the iPad wifi only or does it have a data plan? . I do this with my daughter all the time. Just install hangouts on the iPad. My daughters is wifi only thus why I set it up this way.

No, you won't be able to send SMS via your iPad using Hangouts. You can send a message over Hangouts only.

I believe you are looking for a solution like MightyText where you are able to actually send SMS from a tablet or computer. I don't know of any cross-platform solution to this (MightyText is android only).

Pretty sure the replier above meant he is able to use Hangouts on his phone to send Hangouts messages to his daughters iPad, not SMS.

Correct. I replied without taking the letters SMS into account.

In my situation, I just want to be able to send a message of some sort from a wifi only iPad to my Android Phone. My 8yr old daughter doesn't have a phone but loves her iPad mini and wants to be able to "text" and "facetime" aka video chat her daddy and I'm all for those things when traveling :p Hangouts is seamless and allows her to do both.

She uses the built in iMessage system to chat and facetime with mom on her iPhone. Funny thing is she'll do so from across the house even.

You can do it with Airdroid. No notifications though.

If you run popup or another notifier you will have them. I love Popup as it's a fully interactive one that I can configure to work on any app. It will pop up like this and or give you the hangouts indicator in the top status bar. I do both.
