Other received box to return phone on Apple Upgrade program. Can I turn it in at the store instead?

I am getting the fedex box today to return my old phone on the apple upgrade program to Apple to close out the loan. Has anyone tried returning it to the Apple store and have them accept it? I tried last year and they told me no but I thought I read somewhere you can do it in store now?

I asked Apple support via chat and they said you could. I have not tried it yet, but also planning to return at store if possible.

Just thought I would save some others a trip. I got the email where they shipped me a box to return my phone in with label. Tracking says end of this week and the email says it could take 2-3 weeks to inspect, process and pay off the loan. I thought I would bring it to the store like I always...

If you buy in store you can, but otherwise no.

If you did an in store pick up you can trade in at the store at that time. Otherwise, you need to use a trade in box so I have been told. Everything from Apple talks about trading in at the store when you pick up. Some people cannot do that. I called for a trade in box and they assured me it would arrive. Since Apple has screwed this up before I will call again on Friday if I don't have a box shipment email.
