The restore from iCloud backup was lengthy. And I was never asked to do an OS update, as many here have stated would happen. Yet somehow, my 15 Pro Max is on 17.0.2. How did it get on 17.0.2 if I never updated the OS? Could it simply have done it quietly, behind my back? Or could it have shipped with 17.0.2 already installed on it?

I can also tell you that my Apple Watch Ultra 2 became unpaired from my 15 PM. Then it got stuck in the analog thing that's supposed to go around. You know, the progress bar that's actually a dial. Now my 15 PM won't see my AWU2 at all. And somehow my AWU2 got disconnected from the cellular connection.

Apple wants you to get a new iPhone. So why do they make the handset upgrade experience so unpleasant?

If you have your old phone, leave it on when you pair your Apple Watch to new phone.

I had the same issue with my watch and had already erased my old phone. But no worries, just erase the watch then pair it as a new watch with your new phone. As long as it was backed up to the cloud everything will carry over and the watch will be just like it was before. Not that big of a deal.

And the cellular connection will come back after I erase it?

Right now I'm texting with T-Mobile for assistance.

I can understand the watch getting unpaired from the phone during handset upgrade.

But the watch completely lost its cellular connection, and now I'm having to clean up the mess. This is inexcusable!

What other surprises am I going to get as a result of upgrading to the 15 Pro Max?

The kitchen will spontaneously combust?

When I went to the T-mobile store for my new iPhone 15 Pro the team member at t-mobile walked through the setup with me every inch of the way including updating the phone 17.0.2 and then pair my new phone to my watch, then erasing the old phone. I do know that I never go to T-mobile resellers be it an independent store or even Best Buy.

I just go to corporate store for T-Mobile as for my opinion they are the best trained and will to best of there ability do everything for the customer.

Apparently my watch hasn't "fully absorbed" the connection.

Hopefully it will absorb it overnight. 😂

This worked perfectly. Thank you.

Apple does not “make the upgrade experience unpleasant”.

Transferring from old device to new is the best way.

Sometimes, the watch pairing will break. Just erase and restore it. Doesn’t take long, and has always worked.

Sometimes issues happen, especially around the launch of new devices and new OS launches. But that is not Apple saying “hey, let’s make this upgrade process difficult and unpleasant”.

It just would have been nice to know beforehand that the watch pairing would break. And along with the breaking of the pairing, the watch lost its cellular connection. I guess the cellular connection is contingent upon the watch remaining successfully paired.

Next year I'll know better as this was a learning experience, unless the are new hurdles next year!

I still can't explain how iOS 17.0.2 got on my phone. Everyone (on the forums) said I would be prompted to upgrade the OS. I never did see a prompt, yet somehow the phone shows it's on iOS 17.0.2.

If this was frustrating for a seasoned iPhone user like me, I can't imagine what the uninitiated must be going through!

Do the quick transfer and you wouldn’t have had any issues..
Yes to this. I did the restore from iCloud. Painful and lengthy for sure. Every time I thought I was all set, something else needed attention. This weekend did the phone to phone transfer with our grandson’s phones. So much easier.

I don’t understand why you did an iCloud restore rather than device to device? That’s way quicker.

If you recently received your iphone 15 pro max, chances are that 17.0.2 was installed at factory before it got shipped out to you and therefore you already had 17.0.2 out of the box.

I exchanged my 15 pro max 512 gb for the 1 tb model and the 1tb i picked up did come with 17.0.2 pre installed so it indicates that the phone was likely built last week.

I understand your frustration. I am a yearly upgrader. I had some hiccups as well while setting up my iPhone 15 pro max and Apple Watch Ultra 2 which never happened before. It was a learning experience. Hopefully, it does not happen next year.
If you still have problems, contact Apple Support or visit Genius Bar.
Keep calm 😊

Next year I'm doing the encrypted backup to my Mac method.
Which is basically the same as doing an iCloud restore. Quick transfer will seamless switch your watch to your new device, I don't understand why you're choosing the two worse methods over just using quick transfer.
