After my iphone 6 fell in water and completely died, I purchased an iphone 8.
XR is too big for me, plus it is $150 more. I like the size of the 8, that is also why I didn't consider 8+.
XS would be amazing I think, because of camera and size and newness, but it is WAY too much money for me to spend.

I have a silver iphone 8 with a new white apple silicone cover. I think it looks refreshing, but it is also very white, maybe a little dated, but I don't care that much about that. When I tried the black phones, it felt dark to me, whereas the white was expansive and less enclosed feeling.
I am still just within the 14 day return window, but that might end after today. So I am considering a few things:
1. returning the silver iphone 8 and buy a black one with black silicone cover.
2. or returning it and buying an iphone xs, but only if money was not an option I would by the xs and the *grey* silicone cover.

The iphone 8 seemed like a nice compromise for cost, rather than spending $400 more.
I mostly just want to feel comfortable and good about my decision with the white 8. Part of my dilemma is the 8 looks almost identical to the phone I had from the outside. Also it is so much white, which I like, but it seems like a statement.

Any support/thoughts?
Thanks

Buy what you want, and a budget is worthwhile to stick to, but......

A phone is something you will spend a lot of time using over the next 1+ years. Recommend getting something you will enjoy the most and be most productive with. Gestures are so much better than the home button and the screen so much more immersive without large bezels.

I don't spend money on many things, but with a phone, I think it's justified. Go with the XS!

If it were me i'd keep what you have. I have a silver XS Max and regretted getting silver over space grey but I ended up not exchanging it. I also regretted upgrading to the XS Max at all. The 8 is a phenomenal phone not much slower at all than the XS and XS Max and take it from me Touch ID and Face ID...it's a wash. They're both great and you're saving yourself some serious coin. Unless your budget supports it then stay put.

I hear you and agree. But alas, I am now outside my 14 day as of tomorrow and I couldn't justify it with our budget, really. In a way, I want to use my phone less and I like that it is super familiar, but an upgrade to what I had with a better camera and faster. I also think if you don't know don't go. If I was 100% sure of that phone being a better fit for me for the money, I would try to make it work somehow, if I am paying per month I can try to justify, but then I think I could buy someone else in the fam a phone, like almost 2 iphone 8 for the price of one XS. So I am mostly happy with what I have, and am embracing it, knowing I will probably get an upgrade in 2 yrs.

Thanks for your input, it is nice to read. Why did you regret getting silver over space grey? I have the silver and was definitely going back and forth. I think basically they are both slick and nice and minimal, so in a way it is a win win. There are things I like about the black - in the older version like the 6-8, the black/grey when off looks like it has a bigger face and when it is on photos they have a black background, but for the white/silver if it is on web browser/email, it seems bigger with the white on top and bottom, which is mostly what I am doing. Photos I am mostly looking at myself, so I am also ok with the white border, it seems like a white matte on a framed piece to me. holds the space nicely and cleanly. Also do you have a case? Seems like with the X's if you get a case you can barely tell what color the phone is. I love the silicone case I just got. I think that if I get sick of too much white (white front, white case), I could try something else, but the 8's don't have nearly as many color options, like lavendar grey or charcoal or stone...

I use a case off an on. Applecare + is my main case haha. I regretted getting silver just because i'm an all black everything kind of person. Just like Batman haha.

I have the 8 plus and I am very happy with it. I think you made a fine choice and your color choice and case selection makes it unique to you. Enjoy it. Look at it this way... It won't be the last phone you buy.

I am skipping the current models altogether. Nothing really stands out to me except the ridiculous prices. If they really want to improve their phones make them waterproof.

The 8 is plenty fast and to me it takes great photos, has wireless charging, good battery life, and no issues. Sure some will base their decision on specs alone, regardless of real world use, but in reality, how much does it stand in the way of using the phone for what it is intended for?

I did look at the new models, including the LCD XR and OLED XS. Both have beautiful screens, but to be honest I could not tell the difference between the two screens. Compared to the 8, there may be a slight improvement, but not $400 worth. At some point I choose to consider value. It's not being able to afford the phone thats an issue, to me it's whether it is a good investment for the money. It's all subjective.

As far as bezels are concerned, I think many people are disingenuous with their comments about bezels. For many years WE ALL used phones with bezels, now all of a sudden there are those who make it sound like a phone with bezels is an antique that is hideous, and unbearable. Ridiculous. Sure phones without bezels look good, but there is nothing wrong with the bezels on the 8. Does not take away from the experience for me at all. I think it is a great phone. Enjoy.

For me in lieu of buying a new phone I purchased the LTE Apple Watch 4. Works great with the 8 plus.

I would keep the 8, as it seems you would appreciate already what it has to offer. Ultimately, can you justify the price point for the XS? Obviously there is some core differences, but the major thing being the form factor, display and face ID being predominate to the XS, if those things are important to you, then I think the iPhone 8 would be the better value here.
