Recent switcher not at all happy with mac mouse

I've just recently bought a Powerbook (so pretty), but like I've seen in some other posts on this board, it's proving harder to switch than I had expected. My current problem is with the tracking speed of both the trackpad and the mouse.

I've used the built-in trackpad, and I also bought a "Kensington PocketMouse Pro Portable USB Mouse" (they carry it at the on-line apple store, so I don't expect any compatibility problems). I find that when my cursor approaches it's target, I naturally slow down the mouse motion, and then the cursor motion gets incredibly slow. Frustratingly slow. I've already got the tracking set as fast as possible, as I like to be able to work with very small mouse motions.

This problem happens with both the trackpad and the mouse. Comparing with the computer I use at work (Dell,WinXP), which feels comfortable to me, I've got it set to the fastest possible, but have a box checked that says "Enhance Pointer Precision". I can throw the cursor from one side of the screen to the other with 2 inches of mouse motion, which means the fast is very fast.

Anyways, this probably seems like a big to-do over nothing, but I thought about it and realized that I've got some 15 years of mouse habits, and not being able to move the mouse comfortably means I'm starting to swear at my mac. I've spent too much time cursing out Windows, and don't want to bring that habit with me.

So if anyone can suggest additional drivers, extra settings beyond the standard tracking speed, I'd really appreciate it.

hey,

if the tracking speed is too slow, there's a system pref you can change..

go to system preferences >> keyboard and mouse.

you'll see some tabs at the top..click mouse and you can change the tracking speed.

does that help at all?

Yeah, ahem, I just checked, and it takes 1.5" of travel on both my mouse and my trackpad to cross the screen, and I got at this through adjusting the tracking speeds...and actually neither of them are maxxed (the mouse is close, though).

But anyway, there have been a *bunch* of threads about drivers and utilities for this issue, so please search.

I also have a Kensington mouse, and they have drivers in their page wich allow for a very fine-tuning of both speed and acceleration. I suggest you check them out.

I find it a little frustrating going from a windows machine with mouse acceleration to my mac where the speed - which can be set fast - is always constant.

Mouse acceleration is something that definitely needs to be added to OS X I believe. MouseZoom is alright, but it doesn't simulate the effect as accurately as I'd like.

I'm semi used to it though, so it's not too bad for me.
