I thought this might be a good place to gather some opinions on this. My 67 year old mother in law needs to become computer savvy if not for anything else, so we will not need to do everything on line for her :) <just kidding we are only thinking of her>

She has barely touched a computer in her life. I tried to set her up with an old IBM thinkpad of mine running XP, but so far she does not seem to grasp it. Plus on that little gem I will need to be vigilant about viruses etc.

So for round two I am thinking of an inexpensive used Mac. She really only needs to email and use the web although it would be really interesting if she could use Google apps someday and who knows if she gets motivated enough it could happen.

She lives in the lower level of our home in a 4 room apartment so space is an issue and she wants to use it at the end of a very large and sentimental dining room table as a workspace. So I was thinking maybe an old iBook or something along those lines but I've noticed older G4 iMacs going for maybe $300 on ebay and the later versions of those can run leopard.

The one piece iMacs would be almost as portable as a notebook, and in reality its something that is going to sit at the end of that table 90% of the time.

Any other thoughts or ideas? Basically looking for something close to one piece and around $200 to $400.

I'm running an old G3 iMac 400 Mhz DV on tiger 10.4.11 , no problems :)

cheap as chips to buy too ;)

edit > If it was my MIL she'd be getting a windows box ~IF~ she was lucky! ...There, I had to say it.

May i suggest you get an old mac mini, they go as low as $300 and most you use come with mouse, keyboard and small display and many can run leopard

For the price you mentioned a G4 iMac or G3 iMac will do the job. The G4 will run Leopard, but a little slow. The G3 would work Ok up to Tiger. In either case try to get one with maximum memory. I have a G4 iMac with 768MB of ram and Leopard. I also have a G3 350Mhz iMac running Tiger (can't remember the memory right now, but it was not the base memory).

Thanks for the replies. Definitely going to continue to look at a G4 iMac. There are many on ebay.

I will be purchasing my MIL a basic 24" iMac for Christmas. She will only use it for emails, some web surfing (mostly travel sites) and to send/receive look at pictures but she will love the big screen and she can use a larger font.

Plus, then you will be able to use it when you visit (and having to use my MIL's current windows machine with a 14' screen on our last trip almost killed me).

Plus, you can always buy a refurbished machine if need be, she will still love it.

Thanks but visiting her for us means just walking downstairs :) A used iMac will do her just fine. Nice for your MIL though.
