I've been using OneDrive but found out recently they've been losing photos so I need an alternative.
Not sure about using Google Photos because of their privacy terms.
iCloud doesn't sem open enough for non Apple products.

Can anyone recommend a generic Photo/Video backup service for the iPhone? A service that comes with an app and the possiblity of simply file copying photos if needed.

It's sort of difficult to direct copy anything on an iOS device. Probably the easiest to use is Dropbox with Carousel as a viewer.

I've been happy with Amazon Photos as one of my photo backup options. It can backup unlimited photos for Prime members and for a little extra annual fee, it can backup unlimited everything. I find it really easy to use for multiple iOS devices, and you can even easily add files from your desktop if needed.

I use onedrive as well. Can you expand on how they are losing photos?
