Recommend co-op LAN FPS?

I have a friend I'd like to do a bit of LAN gaming with, but I'm a lot more advanced than him, so I'd prefer to play on the team against an AI computer. We have 3-4 Intel Macs around (and might even run 3-4 person LAN parties if we get something working nicely). I'd prefer to play offline vs AI, but I'm not opposed to paying money for Team Fortress 2 or something if it's really superior. We're in India so we'd be sharing a single 512kbps crappy Internet connection, and sometimes the connections are glitchy (drops for 5-10 seconds or worse once an hour).

Neither of us has a working or healthy Bootcamp partition and would really prefer to stay within OS X. Does anyone know if Team Fortress 2 even has an AI, or it's all online all the time?

IIRC COD 4's LAN mode was only head-to-head, no AI, correct?

Input appreciated! And yes, I tried to search twice but Macrumors glitched out and didn't return any result..
 
Any of the Unreal Tournaments, especially the 2004 edition are outstanding for just this purpose. If not enough players, A.I. bots can be added to your teams or it can be the humans against the bots.
 
I played SWAT 4 with a friend and it was a lot of fun. It's not a fast paced game at all, so be prepared to work together and play patiently.

Playing new games is always fun with friends because you start on the same level and both suck.

left 4 Dead for mac should be coming soon, its what i used to teach my wife how to play FPS.....dont know when it will show up though....
 
Team Fortress 2 a no-go?

So there's no AI in TF2? I don't mind paying, even for two licenses if it would get me where I want (and I like the cartoony graphics) but I fear our Internet speed (512kbps with even worse latency) will yield a very poor experience.
 
L4D2 is out.. any other options?

Just to revive this thread, I just bought and SLOWLY downloaded the $6 L4D2. I was about to buy a second license for my friend for LAN gaming when I saw the price went up to $20. The other reason I'm hesitant is the gore factor and I have 3 small kids running around.

With Steam becoming more prevalent with more options all the time - is there another LAN-based (as opposed to online only) Co-Op game that I can buy 2-3 copies of for Mac-based LAN parties? Other recommendations? I might just shell out the additional $20 for L4D2 and be hardcore about keeping my kids out when we're gaming, but I see a few other multiplayer options - how do I know if they have LAN options?

P.S. it should have decent bots

I'm not a hardcore FPS guy, and my friend is basically a newb, so when I saw LAN Co-Op obviously that means it needs to have decent bots. I don't care so much about ally-bots, but the AI enemy should be decent and ideally, adjustable in difficulty.

After downloading Steam for Mac, you should head into the game page of a game that interests you. There, you can find videos, screenshots, reviews, prices of single licenses, multi licenses, and all.

In that same page you will also find a "Game Details" box which shows you precisely which modes are playable in any given game, i.e. single-player, multi-player, co-op, availability of stats, achievements, "steam cloud", even things like controller availability and HDR availability.

Their stuff goes on sale all the time. Right after the holidays, they have a gimongous sale.
 
Thanks for the recommendation for Nexuiz. It's downloading now. Bots are decent and their difficulty is adjustable, I hope?

BTW, I've been to Hamilton, NZ. Quaint little town :)
