I need a 500gb FW800 drive for keeping my photos on to be used for editing with Lightroom. I'm looking for an external drive that's faster than USB. Any recommendations. I'm looking at the G Drive mini for $140, but that's expensive compared to what I can get USB for (my 2TB WD Elements was for $80 so 500gb seems relatively expensive). But I guess I'm willing to pay a premium for FW800.

I have had good luck with the 1TB Lacie drives. I'm not sure if they make 500GB ones still. Who knows whose disks they use (probably several mfrs) but they seem to perform well. I believe I have lost 1 of 5 (or maybe 6 total) to a premature end, thats it.

Isn't the g drive mini a small portable drive with a 7200 rpm 2.5" drive with fw800, fw400 and usb2 and esata? That would cost more than an ext 3.5" with USB.

Check macsales.com. They have many options. Acomdata has a sale on enclosures where u add your own drive.

Cheers,

I have two OWC Mercury Elite's, one is the Mercury Elite Aluminum and the other is the Mercury Elite Classic. One is a 500 and the other is a 750GB external, 7200 rpm. Both of these come with the FW800, FW400 and USB interfaces. They come set up for Apple and work very well.

I will be buying a 1 or 2tb from them soon, it will be the Mercury Elite Aluminum. Give them a look see, they may work for you.
