Recommend Printer

Hey:

Wife wants a printer. Currently, we have an HP lAserjet 4, which hooks up via Parellel Port, thus is unusable for the Mac.

Probably want to go color, something that will do Photos really well. We have had in jet before, but it seems like the inks dry out before we use them- we do not print a whole lot, but it is nice to have.

So, and suggestions?

I really like canon. They've got individual colour cartridges. So you dont have to blow the bank when colour runs out

I second the Canon recommendation if you're looking for a letter/A4-sized inkjet. Even their 4-color models do a great job with photographic prints. Black text quality is outstanding, ink cartridges are fairly inexpensive, the print engines are fast and quiet, clogging is not an issue.

There are ways to make your LaserJet 4 networkable and thus accessible to your Mac(s). Might want to look into what JetDirect card it takes (make sure it has a 10-Base-T port) and then hit eBay.

Two excellent suggestions. The HP LJ 4 was so much better with the networking card.

I'd also like to recommend Canon's photo printers. Spend as much as you can to get a better range of colour and better detail, but even the cheaper models do a very nice job.

Thanks for gettiong pointed in the right direction, I will look at Canon..

Not too big on keeping the LJ4- I have had it 12 years, so I got my $$ out of it! Now, I have a paper jam on just about every piece that goes through it.

That sounds as if you've been using dusty paper. It likely needs a good cleaning. I believe that you can buy certain sheets to clean a laser printer's paper path, rather than have it taken apart.

Bingo! Clean that LJ thoroughly inside & out & it will most likely give you another 12 yrs Use the cleaning sheets and canned air available at any office supply store.... and use it for strictly text printing, and get a 6 color inkjet for photos....

Canon & the upper line Epsons are among the best out there.

Canon is really nice. I have an epson and havbe found it to be quite good as well, ink is a wee bit more than (some) canon models, mine is an r200, has 6 ink cartridges, alway nice to just have to replace only the empty. Had it for ~9 months no drying of ink yet, still on original cartridges. mine even prints on cd/dvd's

My dad has a canon printer, it does a pretty good job with photos. I have an HP photosmart 2575, which i have found to be pretty good with photos. They tend to come out darker than they appear onscreen, but that may be due to the program i use, or the printer settings, or maybe all printers do that (which is what i was told). It is an all in one with a memory card reader, which comes in handy.

i've got two epson, i love em both. One of them is a 1280 and it's are really nice - can print up to 13 x 19 inches, borderless. The prints come out great too. There are epson profiles to fit the paper perfectly, but you need to pick the right ones.

I'd recommend it but if you don't print much - I've noticed a few problems with mine after not using it in a week.

Even though I love my epson, I have heard some shaky things about some of their low end printers, so watch out there.

Canon for me. Looking at the Canon PIXMA MP800R as a replacement for my scanner and Epson printer... always had good luck with Canon printers, not so much with the epson. FWIW.

I was looking at the 800... and I went to your link, and saw WIRELESS> I like that. That (and one bill) are the difference between the 800 and the 800R. ANd I am thinking I can use the slide capibility..

Anything else in the ballpark, networkable (wireless not needed, it is 2 feet from the router) that will do slides?
