Hi all,

I have a Mac Pro 5,1 2012, 128GB of RAM, several SSDs, running 10.13. I ordered a flashed GTX980Ti from Macvidcards a few years ago for better Windows performance when booted into Windows 10, from an ATI 5870 Apple GPU. I have since removed it, more or less to evaluate the difference in performance in OS X between the two, and found out for my work and usage was little difference between the two. I have two Apple 27" LED Cinema Displays as my monitors.

I would like to continue using this workstation that I have had since 2013 ordered directly from Apple BTO, and it has operated flawlessly since ownership. I use it primarily for virtualization labs and with no heavy lifting in the GPU department, but have tossed around the idea of doing some video editing with it. I do have the complete Adobe CC suite installed, as well as Final Cut Pro, but these are rarely used but I have intentions on changing that for video on some photos.

I do want to maintain the boot screen, and run Windows 10 x64 Enterprise (now 1909) on it, but as of recent only on occasion.

Since I am not a GPU expert and not a "gamer" but would like whatever GPU I get for 10.14 (and perhaps 10.15 but right now have 32-bit application needs so that would be a little ways off) to be somewhat future proof, and be good at rendering FCP and Adobe's CC suite as well as maintain the boot screen, what would the 5,1 users recommend? I would prefer to get an off-the-shelf GPU at Best Buy if possible, but do not want to essentially downgrade from the 980Ti performance in Windows on the occasion I use it.

Any advice, pros/cons would certainly be appreciated!

Thanks!

EDIT: I wanted to add I am indeed combing through the invaluable FAQs and Wikis that have been posted on this topic, and am doing my own research, not expecting answers without doing my own homework.

As anything in computers, some of the low-end GPUs now I am sure perform as good or better than the high-end GPUs a few years ago. I understand that Nvidia GPUs OpenGL performance assisted greatly in the content creation area, and was wondering that ATI variant would be comparable?

I also use FileVault.

When I asked a similar question (coming from a MacVidCards GTX 1070), the Radeon RX 580 was recommended to me. Apparently, even though it is a big step down in benchmark performance, the real-world performance on Mojave is superior even to the GTX 1070 because Metal under Mojave is just that much more efficient than OpenGL under High Sierra.

I haven't replaced my card yet, so I have no feedback. The RX 580 is an officially supported card and does not require any modification of the Mac for extra power, so I don't expect any hiccups with it at all. The pinned graphics card upgrade thread (which it sounds like you already found) has many, many more details.

Regarding FileVault, you cannot run it on the Mac Pro under Mojave. I believe someone here managed to encrypt their disk with some workarounds, but this is not supported. You must disable FileVault before installing Mojave; it cannot be re-enabled.

You briefly mentioned 10.15 Catalina, but just to make sure you're aware, it won't run on the Mac Pro without some extra steps; it's not officially supported and is blocked from installing or updating. Thus far, many here have successfully installed it and it runs fine for them, but this could change at any time if Apple releases an update that causes it to break on the Mac Pro (which has occurred on other systems in the past). Best to wait and see.

Thanks for the reply. Does Mojave support FileVault in any circumstance on the 5,1, or is it a limitation of it not having the ability to prompt for the password?

Mojave actively blocks filevault MP5,1. You have to remove the blocks to make it work and you need a GPU with pre-boot configuration support to use it.

I replaced my 980ti MVC with an MSI RX 580 8G, and it's been awesome . . . no boot screens . . . I do not run Windows on my MP, so I can't speak to the nuances therein ;)

@tsialex - is the block something that must be commented out/removed on every .1 release, or just during installation? Do you have a pre-boot screen capable card you would recommend?

Thanks!
