Hi there

I have recently placed my order for a 15" 2.4GHZ MCP. This will be my first Mac and I cannot wait, and what I was wanting is some recommendations for software and other cool stuff I should get for my mac.

I will be using the MBP for all the usual stuff plus photo and video editing.

Also, anyone got any recommendations for an external Hard Drive and a Monitor. I do like the look of the apple 23" cinema displays but the price sort of puts me off.

Any recommendations from you knowledgeable mac users will be greatly appreciated. And at least this will give me something to think about until I finally get the MBP.:)

Cheers

There are great free software lists here :)

Some people hope for updates and/or price cuts to the monitors at WWDC on Monday...

Programs that I highly recommend: Adium, VLC, WMV Player, Firefox, WhatSize (for you to know what is taking up space in your HD), Onyx (great maintenance app), and:

See this link:

Link for the best software recommendation threads.

And never forget to make The Idiot Test.:D I never get bored with this game.

Monitor-wise, I'd thoroughly recommend the 24" Dell 2407WFP. It's full HD compatible (1080p), has a shed-load of inputs (DVI, VGA, Component, S-Vid, Composite), 4 usb ports and a 9-in-2 media card reader. It's also cheaper than the 23" ACD - $700 direct from Dell instead of $900. You could also save more by buying it from ebay etc.

External hard drive--find something with FW800, like the mybook pro's (WD)

display--I've had good luck with Samsung's LCDs, but if color's critical, spend the extra $$$

Thanks guys, the recommendations is already giving me loads to think about and even better taking my mind of the arrival of the MBP.

I have another question, this may be stupid but I have never used OSX for more than the odd hour in an apple store. Do all the apps icons go into the dock bar? I dont really want that to be overcrowed with things I might use once every blue moon.

The dock is only for common apps you use. You can organize them, and remove or put new icons.

You have the Applications folder to have all your apps.

Thats good, for a minute I thought I was going to have a dock about a foot long
