Just putting some feelers out there for recommended apps for editing PDFs. The PDFs I'm working with (workbook files) crash or lock up Preview, and text input for the forms is broken, with some forms not accepting text input, not saving text, or ignoring formatting entirely. Adobe Reader is even worse, and Skim fares no better.

My only requirements is that it's software that, if paid/shareware, is not on a subscription plan, and is still compatible with macOS Catalina.

Given the severity of problems, maybe the issue originates with the actual PDF files.

Can you look at what software was used to make the problematic PDFs and tell us what it says? I think it's the "Content creator" item in the PDF's embedded metadata. If the PDF crashes anything that opens it, though, that's an obstacle, unless "Get Info" in the Finder shows something useful, or maybe 'mdls' in a Terminal window.

+1 from me for pdfexpert.

I tried the wondershare offering but there was quite a delay in screen rendering large documents (I suspect Rosetta was the issue).
