Recommendations for registering and hosting?

I'm looking to start up a new website and also a personal blog. What are some recommendations for registering and hosting? I've heard keeping the host separate from the place you register is a good idea. Just to avoid any hijacking that I constantly read about, with them changing your service and then you being at their mercy because they control both the registering and hosting of the site.

I was thinkint about just registering at register.com and then maybe using a local host.

Thoughts?

A lot of people rate A small orange as a good host.

Personally, I've used Pair networks and have found their service and uptime impeccable. My only comment is that they are a bit more expensive than many and I don't really like the way they see things like PHP as an excuse to charge even more.

I just started a website and I registered with www.ipowerweb.com since it was only $2.95 for 2 years, and they had very friendly service. They even had a guy call me to make sure everything had gone through properly.

I also recently got hosting from www.dreamhost.com which seemed to have the best deal in terms of space/bandwidth/services. I haven't experienced any problems and I like their configuration options and site management, but I also haven't been too taxing on their servers ...yet

A Small Orange had a lifetime promotion, you may want to check them out, it may still be available.
I moved to ASO from another hosting company after looking at all the reviews and comments here, and have been very happy with them.

My experience with DreamHost has been very positive, but my usage of the site is mostly limited to (a) posting stuff here on MR; and (b) sharing files with family. If your bandwidth needs are reasonably small, DreamHost is very inexpensive. I've always gotten good response from their technical staff as well. They are especially attractive if you want a lot of disk space for storing files off-site (I wouldn't use them as your sole backup, but as an additional level of protection, they work fine).

Of course, ASO is consistently well-loved and well-reviewed around here.

I won't get into the webhost part of it, but I would suggest that you register your domain elsewhere, like Yahoo. Not only would it be cheaper, but you are not tying your domain to your host and should avoid any problems.

Yahoo is currently running a deal for $2.99 a year for up to 5 years.

I'd highly recommend GoDaddy for registering your domain and either HostGator or despite what iGary has said Dreamhost for hosting (both of which I use).

Just wondering, is there any difference between Go Daddy and Yahoo for registering a domain? Not trying to be snippy, but why pay Go Daddy $8.95 a year when you can do with Yahoo and get three years for about the same price?

What is the criteria for a good domain registrar anyway? Should we just look for the best deal and make sure that there are no additional charges for hosting the site elesewhere?

I am also using Dreamhost. I heard the horror stories and decided that since I could get an entire year for less than $10, if the service sucked, I would not be out much at all. Just use their anniversary coupon code of "777" to get that rate.
