Well I gave my laptop away to my sister whos going to uni in the next few days. So I'm sitting here laptopless and may take a punt at a non Apple laptop if a new macbook doesn't come out this month.

Was just looking for recommendations to look into from the house? Thanks

A Toshiba. I have had 2 and both never gave me a lick of trouble. One I sold as I did not need it any more, the other, I gave to a family member after I bought this Macbook.

yeah.. my roomate was using toshiba and he really doesnt take care of his laptop at all. But he never had any problem for 4 yrs. amazing..

don't get a dell they are overpriced and not very good, i bought one about 5 years ago and before it was paid off it caught fire  but since i didn't get the warranty i got screwed and had to finish paying for something i didn't have. Go for a Gateway or HP.

I like the Sony Vaio line, but they're slightly more expensive than I think you want to spend. Since you left us with ZERO information as to what your budget was and such then I say:
Vaio
Toshiba
eeePC

But personally I love my EEE PC, if you're looking at netbooks. Also Dell's Mini 9 looks nice too(just announced officially today!)

See how those are only 349-550, I'd say so for a low end one of those, then you could wait out a MacBook for quite sometime, and end up with nice netbook to.

guys and dolls (I love you all)....

Absolutely NO budget. I do want it to be 16" or smaller and please note:

THIS IS A DELL FREE ZONE

Forgive the question, but you'd buy a Windows simply because a new Mac isn't available?

I can't recommend Dell or Sony. I've heard bad things about both, and experienced bad things about both brands. Toshiba comes the most recommended... I would say IBM, but they're Lenovo now and I'm not sure about that.

Over the past few years, before I switched to Mac, I have had both a Toshiba (good, rugged machine) and a Sony Vaio (elegant and stylish) and found them both to have been pretty good.

Cheers

I used to recommend HP but lately I've been having some major problems with them. So I'd might go with a Sony or an Asus.

edit - just reread your post...why wouldn't you just get a macbook and put windows on it?!

The least problematic non-Apple laptop I've had was an old IBM (1.3ghz Celeron CPU, for age). Damn thing was built like a tank and I hear that quality still continues with Lenovo.
