I am thinking about ios 9.1 on the iPhone 5s.

What is the absolute best way to clean install this thing?

1. DFU mode?
2. Recovery mode?
3. Set up as new?

I have done my backups to the cloud and local but I really want to ensure that I get a super clean ios install with zero reminders of anything prior. I am willing to reset/download all my apps and set everything up (email etc) clean.

Appreciate any mini guides or recommendations.

Cheers!

Wont matter how you do it, but a restore and set up as new iPhone would be the way to go. I would do a restore upgrade in iTunes as this will wipe any old iOS version.

Couple of questions on this method.

1. Just in case I really mess this up - does my "full" backup allow me to return to my current 7.1.2 version of ios - in full?
2. I will be using iTunes to upgrade - but where/how do I do a "restore upgrade"?

No. The full backup doesn't backup iOS itself. If you stuff up, you have to go to the latest signed version as a minimum (it's now 9.1).

If you hit restore it will tell you you need to update, just follow the prompts.

None of the answers here are correct. For a super cleanest install, you would have to take your phone apart, de-solder all DRAM, SRAM and flash chips, replace them with new ones and then reload the OS.
