I've been using windows my entire life and now I've got a MacBook Pro coming my way. I was wondering which software everyone recommended? Specifically for torrents (obviously I only use this legally), transmission looks alright. Any recommendations? Security wise, would the Mac version of Malwarebytes suffice? Any other "must have" software or apps? Thanks much. + I came across a post somewhere of someone raving about a program that takes video files and automatically adding in cover art and genre so it would fit in iTunes perfectly. Frankly I don't even know what type of program to search for. If anyone has any idea of a really good program that would do that or at least tell me what I should search for, that would be great.

I like uTorrent. Transmission doesn't seem to download as fast.
No anti-virus is needed on a Mac.
I believe the app is called iDentify.
What do you use your computer for? This would help me get a better understanding as to what software might be best.
The apps my Mac came with meet most of my needs.
I did add Office for Mac, but seldom use it any more. I find Pages and Numbers easier, and more intuitive to use, but that comes down to what you are used to, and personal preference. Word has more features, but Pages has all I need.
A Mac can open Word documents with Pages, and export Pages documents as Word, with little or no problem. There can be a few hiccups converting between Numbers and Excel, but as long as they are just basic documents, without headers and the like things are OK.
I find VLC, which I downloaded, useful in various situations. It seems less fussy about CDs and DVDs than iPlayer.
Security….. go to System Preferences and set the Security and Privacy to suit your requirements. Keep up with the security and OS updates as the turn up. Stay clear of dodgy websites, and you should be fine.
I have installed Sophos anti-virus a couple of times, and checked out the system, but found no threats after six year of using my present Mac. It seems to slow things down when on-line, so I uninstalled it, and tossed it in trash.

Thanks for the replies! I've always used uTorrent, but recently I heard they were using cpu cycles for mining or something along those lines? I don't know if that's an issue on Mac. I'm careful about the malware they "offer" to install for me, but thanks for the heads up. I was hoping there was a better alternative to it.

I mainly would use it for movies, internet, some word processing... I mean really basic things to be honest. Nothing too intensive.

I would use iWork instead of Office for Mac. Office is slow and buggy, and Pages is much easier to use.
