Hey guys..I'm on my iBook now, listening to some stuff on the radio online...is there anyway to record what I'm listening to so I can have it saved as a file? There's some goooood unreleased stuff

Audio Hijack seems to be a perennial favourite for this.

I personally use WireTap Pro. Its pretty close to Audio Hijack except for the following.
WireTap Pro records everything at once, so if you are recording off of a DVD and hit the sound up button, the little sound blip gets recorded, where as Audio Hijack just records what a specific program is spitting out. The downside to audio hijack here is though, you have to know in advance that you want to record, and Audio Hijack has to 'Hijack' the program to record it, so say you are half way through a DVD and want to record it, you would then have to bookmark it, shut down DVD player, than Hijack DVD player and get back to your spot and start recording.
Of course WireTap and Audio Hijack offer good demo trials, so give em both a shot and pick your favorite.
Also for listening to online things, you can use both of these programs to set record times, and have them connect to whatever source you want at whatever time to record, such as internet radio or shows.

I downloaded audacity and wanted to test it out on a radio stream in iTunes... when I clicked on record in Audacity, iTunes went quiet.

I also like that it will split the songs up into individual mp3 files automatically (unless you tell it not to). While many internet radio files will not be complete (the beginning or end of the songs may be chopped off because of how they are broadcast, etc) you may find the auto file creation feature useful for many type of internet broadcasts.

There's an app that comes with mac os that I discovered by accident called 'Sound Studio' however it records huge non compressed files.
Does audio hijack compress as it records? or does it also make big files that then need to be be compressed?

If this doesn't work, as it didn't for me, you can very easily just use iTunes to compress the file.
you might wanna look at the record settings. it can be set to record to mp3, aac, wav, etc.chucknorris said:

I just read the read-me file (what a drone I am!), which seemed to indicate capability to record only to .aiff with compression coming later. I assumed you could use lame or something (like with Audacity), but haven't really toyed with it much yet.
