recording from mini disc

im trying to record from mini disc in to my imac g5 and i was wondering how...i have to use the line in jack but what with and how

I have an iMic from griffin technologies and it works great for recording anything to your Mac. It comes with some simple software that is easy to use. I'm pretty sure the sound quality is also superior to the line in the iMac as well.

You could also use GarageBand or QuickTime Pro if you have them. Some Macs also came with a little program called Sound Studio that could do the job.

You need to come out of the headphone output or line out (depending on your MD player) and into the Audio in on the iMac -- you'll need cables appropriate to both machines -- probably a stereo 1/8" mini jack on both ends.

On virtually any MiniDisc player, there is no way to digitally transfer ATRAC content to a Mac. (Sony has apparently Just come out with a superMD format that has additional capabilities but it wil be about US$500)

It's impossible to transfer ATRAC digitally at faster than real time speeds from a regular MD. However, Hi-MD, in addition to holding a lot more data per disc, allows high speed transfers over USB for audio that was recorded via analog (line-in or mic in) on the minidisc recorder. The consumer models aren't Mac compatible, or at least aren't advertised as Mac compatible. However, Sony now has two models (MZ-M100 and MZ-M10, based on the MZ-RH10 and MZ-RH900, respectively) which do allow high speed uploading of a PCM recordings to Macs over USB. I saw them at Guitar Center the other day, and Mac compatibility was prominently advertised.

All that is fairly irrelevant to the OP unless he/she has one of those two models, and Canada RAM's method is the way to go. I've done it many times with my PowerBook with great results. I find Audacity to be fine for recording, and it's free.

I don't have an iMic, so I'm not guaranteeing anything, but that is what the iMic is for, so I would be shocked if it didn't let you. I've used Garageband, QT and Audacity to record from MD and vinyl to my PowerBook (via the built-in line in jack) with excellent results.

Yes, the iMic is pretty flexible, the Mac is happy to treat it like one of its own devices. SoundSource, a free menu bar futility from Rogue Amoeba, is very handy to have when using devices like this.
