Which software would be best for recording LP's & audio cassette tapes.

GarageBand or Audacity ?

I'm trying to decide which would be "better" and what would be the disadvantage of Garageband (if any) over Audacity, for this purpose.

I suggest using Audacity for this particular purpose

Audacity is excellent for working with simple stereo tracks. That's what it's built for, the interface is entirely devoted to just that purpose, and a lot of the available plugins were created for cleanup of analog/digital conversion.

Sure, GarageBand would get the job done, but I think for ease of use and it's dedication to this purpose, Audacity would be the better choice

Another vote for Audacity - much better suited for this task. You may also want to get "Book of Audacity" (see http://nostarch.com/audacity.htm ) and check out the chapter "Transferring Vinyl LPs (and Other Legacy Media) to CD". It has TONS of great tips and tricks.
