I once used a free application to scan an erased SD card for lost photos and recover them.

Is there a recommended application for Mac OS X that can recover deleted (emptied trash) files on an HD?

I know this depends on whether the sectors have been re-written since the erased file was deleted, but I'm just curious if there's an easy way to scan for deleted files.

Yes there are plenty of Applications out there which can scan the disk but most of them are 'expensive' and then you still have to figure out which files are which, many times these files have no names anymore so you get lets say pictures recovered with generic names.

Also, the above two mentioned two programs, Prosoft is not really a favorite of mine and the other one is windows like and needs online activation which I really dislike, not only that, most of them also don't have trails, you have to pay up in front to recover anything and if the program can't do the job or dislike it your money is gone.
