Recover images from backup?

Are the camera roll images saved in the iTunes backup file and if so, is it possible to retrieve them? Guess that will teach me not to back up my data

Edit: Windows XP if that makes a difference!

Thanks, my google searching skills are clearly lacking today! I tried the Windows software and eventually got it to work, only to be told its a demo version and only does 1 file at a time (and that takes ages while it re-reads the backup files!). And its £15 which I really don't fancy paying. The search continues....!

Hands down the best program ( free or paid) for recovering pictures is PC inspector smart recovery... but it only works if you cant mount the drive/card/etc ( so it might not work on the iPhone)
