I have a mid-2017 Macbook Pro (specifically this one) that won't power on because of a faulty logic board. I need to recover the data from it and I know that in the 2017 MBPs Apple still didn't remove the recovery port.

Normally I would just remove the SSD and plug it into another Mac, but the 2017 MBPs already have the SSDs soldered onto the logic board.

According to this article:

There’s a data recovery port on the board that Apple techs can use to copy data from the embedded storage to a new MacBook using the Migration Assistant. Apple made a special interface box specifically for this process.

But I can't find any reliable information on using Migration Assistant and the data recovery port when the Macbook won't even turn on.

Is this something that can only be done by Apple? I would like to try myself before I send it to repair...

I'm sorry to preach, but this is why you need to have a good backup plan. I would encourage you not to make the same mistake moving forward, especially since no recent machine has this recovery port.

Now, about your data...the article you linked to also says that Apple has to user a special interface box to retrieve the data from the computer. So unless you happen to have one, I think you're stuck sending it to Apple.

OP:

You didn't tell us where you are in the world.

Do you have a brick n mortar Apple Store close by?
If so, then make an appt for the genius bar and take it in, let them look at it.

They MIGHT be able to get the data from the drive for you (no promises).
If they do this, they'll probably require that you pay for an external drive to HOLD the data.

They might even be able to diagnose the logic board problem.

And -- like chabig has said -- learn something about the concept of "Backing up" for the future.

Hi there.
How valuable is the information inside your Mac? That's the important question.
A thousand bucks could solve your problem:

However, I believe that it makes more sense to use a logic board repair service first.
Usually they charge $250-350 for your model, and besides you get a working Mac again.
