Recovering Old .me account email

i used to have a mobile me email account about a year ago but cancelled and switched to gmail. is there a way i can recover the old email handle to use with icloud or would i need to make a new name all over again?

I don't know what e-mail domains are being issued right now, so if it is still .me I would try to sign up or register the same addy and see if it goes through.

yes, i did try it but it says its already taken.
