Personally, I use Time Machine and CrashPlan. But there are lots of other backup solutions. Any of them is better than none.

Did you select the "remove user securely option? In that case there is no way to recover data.

If you didn't chose that option then you might be able to recover some data with third party software such as Data Rescue, Disk Drill etc. but odds are still low. Make sure you read the instructions from developer website before using such software and do not under any circumstance use your Mac until you are ready to start the recovery! Using Mac will likely override the data you are trying to recover...

Making regular backups is the only way to make sure you don't lose data.

OP:

If -- as Ebenezum described above -- you've "securely deleted" the home folder, you ain't gettin' that data back. It's gone.

If you deleted it "un-securely" the data might still be there, but since you're still using the drive in question, the odds are that some of it has since been over-written and is also "gone for good". The likelihood of recovery is low.

You've learned a hard lesson here.
Go forth, young man, sadder... but wiser.

You need to learn something about the concept of "backing up".
Best way to do it:
1. Get an external hard drive (USB is fine)
2. Get backup software (I will always ALWAYS recommend either CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper)
3. Use it (very easy) on a regular basis, twice a week, even once a week will do.
