I am so confused, I don't know what to do.
Earlier today I hooked up my iphone to my computer (Windows). Downloaded a couple of applications and it asked if I wanted to update my iPhone to the newest version. I said yes. It downloaded all the apps, and then all of a sudden my iPhone had a screen with the iTunes logo and the USB cable. My phone was still connected to the computer. I disconnected it, turned it off, turned it back on and it showed that screen again, when I plugged it back in, iTunes said "detected an iPhone in recovery mode" and advised me to 'restore' it. I clicked to restore, and it looked like everything was working, the phone had the apple logo with the circle thing below it, but then a small window comes up on my computer saying that it is 'verifying iphone softeware.' When this window comes up, my phone has the itunes logo with the USB cable again. I have tried this 3 times now, and this keeps happening!! I tried doing it on my laptop that also has iTunes, and now it is saying that the hardware is 'unrecognizable'. I don't know what to do next.

It is supposed to show the iTunes logo with a USB cable. Leave it like that, then iTunes will reactivate the phone and the icon will go away.

It's okay and still doing what it's supposed to do even though this is the same screen that comes up when I turn it on when it's not connected to anything?

My internet connection just got interrupted and the iTunes store still had the window that said "verifying iPhone software" and my phone still has the iTunes and USB thing. It's been connected for over 2 hours now, and about 1 hr 45 min it has said this same thing.

Still having problem?

I'm having the same problem, just got home to update my wife's version 1 Iphone, and it is doing exactly as you have described. It won't update, and it won't restore. Have you got it resolved?

i'm having the same issues as well right now. i tired to update my software tonight, and it gave an error. now it's trying to restore (which means I lost all my info on the gas tracker app!!), but i'm just getting the apple logo and spinning wheel thing. hope it's not an apple server thing right now...

you guys should try restoring from DFU mode.

with your iPhone connected, press and hold home and power button until it turns off.

Hold home and power for ten seconds, on ten let go of the power button and keep holding home, in 10 seconds itunes will see an iPhone in recovery. Restore it.

My first update ended up bricking my iPhone on my PC. Nothing I did on the iPhone would restore it. iTunes would not even asked for the iPhone to be restored. It just sat there connecting endlessly. I spent a good day trying to get my iPhone to work again, and I got it to work again.
What I suspect is that some USB driver was causing the issue.
To get it working, I temporarily disabled all my USB ports except the one the iPhone would be plugged into. I put the iPhone in recovery mode. I made sure iTunes was NOT running. I plugged in the iPhone, iTunes started and it said that the iPhone needed to be restored. From there I just restored the software.

Thank you for all of the suggestions, however, I have tried them all to no avail. For those of you that are having a similar problem, I was on the phone with an Apple Rep for over 2 hours last night. We switched computers, switched USB ports, uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes, and nothing worked, and now I have an appointment with someone at the Apple store AN HOUR AWAY tomorrow to see if they can figure out what the problem is. On the phone last night, the rep even contacted a "product specialist" who said that we did everything to try. Tomorrow they are going to determine if it is a problem with my phone or my USB cable...and replace which ever one is not working, I will let you guys know what I find out! Thanks so much for the suggestions!

I had the exact same problem - phone wouldn't turn on - wouldnt' restore - wouldn't do anything at all!

Took it to the apple store and they gave me a new one - so that's probably what will happen for you tomorrow!

good luck!
