red wine in pb panic NOW

Hello There

Could use some experienced advice on what to do next...

My 17" pb was standing on a dinnertable when a glass of red wine standing behind the screen was tipped over... somehow a lot of the wine also washed up on the keyboard, coming through under the screen or something. I dried it and turned it of also taking battery out. But there seem to still come some drops out here and there...

How fatal does this sound and what's the best way of treating it from this point?

I really don't know if your nice 17" PowerBook is dead or not. I don't know how much wine was spilled, how much is left, etc. The only way you will really know is by turning it on. (NOT YET THOUGH!)

I think the best idea is to try and drain/dry most of the liquid with just the air or with paper towels. I wouldn't recommend jamming the paper towel between the keys or pressing any keys, just wipe it down gently. Then possible get one of those compressed air canisters at the hardware store with one of those little red straw nozzle deelees once the excess has drained/ dried. Don't know if this would help or possible force the liquid into places it wasn't already. Maybe a vacuum would be better for this? Anyone else with some *real* experience?

Good suggestion w the compressed air i think, but everything is closed this side of the planet at the moment... and yeah, I just whiped it very carefully..

If I were you, I'd wait a day and a half, just to be sure..

if ANYTHING is still wet, it could short something out.

I had a similar incident with a glass of white wine and a 15" PB about a year back. Working under the assumption that that red wine and white wine interact with a PB in the same way, unplug it, take out the battery and give it a good day or two to dry before turning it on. Mine came out OK in the end, hopefully yours will too.

I doubt you should be that worried, I spilled a good couple litres of lemonade all over my laptop (old crappy compaq evo from a few years ago), and just whiping it didnt seem to solve the problem. I just took the laptop completely apart and washed everything with rubbing alchohol and let it dry apart then put it back together.

Computers are generally resilient, as long as there hasnt been a short-out already.

You need to do something more than just let it dry out. Red wine will leave a residue in the computer, and should it ever need service through Applecare, I guarantee you that Apple will void your warranty (that is if it hasn't expired already). Chances are it might foul up some keys in your keyboard if wine gets inside those tiny little switches. If you are comfortable with disassembling your PowerBook, it should be thouroghly washed out with water and allowed to completely dry. Water won't harm the computer as long as it is allowed to dry before power is applied.

depending on how much got in there... red wine can get pretty sticky as it dries... If you're truly paranoid... I'd send it away to http://www.macresq.com/ or someone similar for an emergency cleaning.

Thank you for all your advice and comforting words... I just turned it on and am writing this on it now - so everything seem to be fine, even without taking it apart and cleaning, which is quite a relief...

I feel i can now safely take up drinking again

I spilled a good half a beer directly into my Pb when reaching down to change the volume, slightly drunk me hit the bottleneck and splash it went. I instantly unplugged, powered down, and removed the battery. I let it sit for at least a day and it still works just fine. The only problem is the open latch button is kinda sticky but this is extremely minor compared to what could of happened glad yours seems to be working.

It was a very nice (for the price) copertino from Apulia in southern italy (the heel) a light and very fruity wine... extremely good for just pouring down

Eh wine in a bottle? I prefer mine in a box. The Peter Vella Blush Vintage 2005 contains a fruitty nutty blend that is crisp. The Franzia chillable red wine Exp. Date 2006 is also another college party favorite. I drank 5 liters of it over two nights a couple of weeks back.
