It means that reddit, which is one of the top 15 most visited sites on the internet, is now in full revolt by its users and moderators, who have effective shut down the majority of the site, and its users are now abandoning the site in a mass exodus and starting over again at competitor sites like voat.co

reddit is quite a user unfriendly website, one has to click and click and click and click and click and click.

Maybe it is for the best.

I wonder if that could ever happen to The Verge. I believe they've decided to turn off article comments and any criticism of content is effectively removed. It seems as though Nilay Patel believes any problems with the site are due to users not himself or anyone else that writes for the site. The quality of content on that site has gone downhill to the point of the site resembling a combination of Buzzfeed/Gizmodo.

Nah, people have/will just leave The Verge. And saying that, it has gone downhill for many years now. They didn't turn off comments on everything, just some things.

But why turn them off at all other than Nilay Patel can't handle any criticism? Some of the comments are due to people not liking the direction the site is going. I think they had 6+ articles on Apple Music and maybe 2 of them were actually worthwhile. I don't care how Verge writers lived with Beats 1 for 24 hours.

I have been on reddit once or twice in an attempt to see what it's all about. I didn't really see anything of redeeming quality on that site. But maybe I missed it.

A news article is not the place to vent about the direction of a website. The Meta forum has always been there for people to do so.

It's not that they can't handle the criticism, it's that it disrupts the website as a whole. When we go look through the comments on a post, we do so to join the discussion on said news posts, and don't care about someone's opinion on whether or not the piece was worthwhile.

The quality content does not exist on the front page, but in topic-specific subforums called subreddits.

The Verge is dead to me. I found myself visiting less often over the last couple of years. Sadly, I haven't found a suitable replacement. The closest I've seen for quality articles is http://qz.com.

The front page is garbage. You have to pick the topics youre interested in to get the good stuff.
