This might sound crazy...

http://www.bookswap.com

I want to purchase this business and the domain name/website rights. How much would it cost to redesign this webpage from the ground-up? I want to make it more user-friendly and add things like pictures and search by ISBN.

My long-term vision is to create it to be a "Netflix of Textbooks" and provide pre-paid boxes to mail in.

What do you think? What would one of you charge?

Crazy indeed. But nice idea for a business. It will depend on your budget anyway, if you are going to get freelancer to do the job. Lowest budget would be $1000 if you want a decent site. If you want a break-through, consider it 5-6 thousands grands. That's just my opinion coming from my previous purchases. But there was one case I have done this to save my money: instead of paying the designers 10k, I signed a deal to split profit with him 5% throughout 3 years. If after one year they don't see much prospect, they can get paid for 7k and end the deal. I got the job done, and have monthly maintenance and upgrade for free.

Hard to bid without knowing the full scope of the project. Anyone who can throw out a number on those requirements I would be weary of. Just keep in mind you get what you pay for. I wouldn't do it for the numbers posted above.

Yeah...it's just an idea. I often look at sites like Flickr or Facebook or YouTube... any while I'm not experienced enough to write programming like that for a site, I have visions of starting companies like that. Facebook was created in 2004... thats like 4 years ago. Think about how he started with it just at Harvard, then moved to other Ivy League schools, and now look. Maybe I'll hang some flyers around campus next semester and see if somebody will take the plunge with me.. :p
