Musclenerd tweeted a couple of hours ago that he's recovered "the long lost source code to redsn0w," and he's now working on an update for the 3.1.2 firmware. It will be multiplatform (Win/Mac/Linux), and will include a new option to change the boot logo.

The Windows port is already in testing! You can get in on the testing on IRC.

ETA: Redsn0w will implement the same jailbreak as PwnageTool; there is still no exploit for the new version of iBoot, so owners of iPT3s and new iPhone 3GSes will have a tethered jailbreak.

This is great news, there might even be a non-tethered jailbreak. But I dont have to worry about that. 1st post.

excellent news i am a great fan of the dev team redsn0w! would this be a better jailbreaking method over blackra1n?

what makes it a better JB method? blackra1n does it in 30 seconds and doest format your memory, so you lose nothing. they both put cydia on your iphone in the end. dont get why its better?

I'm guessing the poster is making reference to the reliability of DevTeam tools versus GeoHot's stuff.

Perhaps as many as 20% of Blackra1n users suffer some type of Wifi, carrier signal, VVM or GPS failure/issues.

From all my reading and personal experience, this is much higher than issues after using DevTeam tools.

My opinion and I agree with that poster.

And I am not a GeoHot hater. He is very talented I for one am glad he does these things for us free of charge.

I don't use Poof and can't stand the BlackRain Logo on my springboard, lol. I'll probably just end up dealing with it though, nothing bad has happened yet

u know u can delete that logo off your phone.. all u have to do is open blackrain and then at the bottom it says something like delete blackrain.. it doesnt uninstall the jailbreak. just deletes the icon

I hope this comes to fruition...I unlocked using Blackra1n and, while I appreciate what GeoHot has done, I'm in that 20% who have network connectivity issues.

I would love a JB/unlock solution that is a little more stable.

I second that. Whenever I have my 3G on, the phone would drop connection every now n then. It doesnt happen when I am on Edge. There were no such issues with ultrsn0w which I had been using for a long time.

I appreciate Geohot and his work but i also suffered issues from blackra1n i tried on 4 seperate instances on my 3Gs.. the first 3 i had the wifi issues and the final time it all ran fine except for the dropped call problem and then on the second day my phone decided to reboot itself and got stuck in a reboot cycle. Pwnage tool is awesome and ive had no issues *knock wood*:D

besides the stability whats the difference between the two as far as the procedure. BlackRa1n was stupid easy. Click a button and done. Does redSnow require more know how.

I have been noticing lately a bunch of springboard crashes. Started on the 1st of this year. Most likey is some system software i might have download but could be blackra1n. Will wait for the RedSnow before i clean re-install

Redsn0w has a couple of extra clicks. It will ask you to point to the ipsw for the firmware installed on your phone (I believe this step is so that the Dev Team doesn't have to copy small portions of Apple code into their jailbreak app, eliminating any copyright infringement claim Apple might make against them). Also, rather than than installing Cydia post-jailbreak, you have to select or deselect it before you install. Finally, it gives you the option of changing the boot logos.

So for Redsn0w the procedure is:

1) Click 'Browse' and select the firmware in you iTunes folder.
2) Click 'Next'
3) Make sure boot logo settings are as you want them and Cydia is selected (via checkbox).
4) Click 'Next'

i am interested to see how redsn0w will be compared to the soon to be (long awaited) released sn0wbreeze and I find it interesting that they could both be potentially released at the same time??!!

iH8sn0w twittered “one major difference between redsn0w and sn0wbreeze is that sn0wbreeze preserves your iphone baseband for an unlock”

Yes, that's because iH8sn0w is stealing PwnageTool code from the Dev Team and passing it off as his own. People should just wait for the Win and Lin ports of PwnageTool.

This is welcome news especially for those of us on Windows platforms. Firmware 3.1.2 has been out for a while now. Hopefully, development will continue onto any new versions of firmware (fingers crossed).

so i have been hearing...there have been a twittering battle last night (08/01/2010) with ih8sn0w and musclenerd who has been politely asking ih8sn0w to give the PwangeTool team credit for the original coding where due (on more than one occasion) and this request has been continuously ignored.

on this ground i agree with thelatinist sn0wbreeze should be boycotted until credit is given to the PwangeTool team.

To be honest I have had zero problems with blackra1n. I was jailbroken on the Pwnage Tool for the longest time but I experienced some stability issues such as system freezes and the inability to wake from sleep. I am sure each user has different experiences and I wanted to share mine. I do hope redsn0w is a success though. It's going to be tough upgrading from my 3G when the new iPhone comes out this summer. I am thinking I'll wait to buy until I can jailbreak because I don't know what I would do without jailbreaking at this point.

And until he open-sources it. That code is copy-lefted, and anyone who uses it is required to release the source code of any resulting applications. iH8Sn0w claims he is keeping it closed to prevent people stealing his code for resale, but he has no respect for other people's rights.

He also has included copyrighted Apple code in his software, making his the first truly illegal jailbreak that I know of. He's giving Apple a real claim against him, and making the rest of the jailbreak community look bad in the process.

I've got pretty much no respect for the man at this point.
