redsnOw and purplera1n not jailbreaking 3GS

I'm trying to jailbreak and unlock my 3gs with both redsn0w and purplera1n and all I keep getting is freeze-ups. For redsn0w it freezes with the little pineapple guy running in sneakers and for purplera1n it freezes with the white guy leaning on the Iphone. I've searched through the forums and all the fixes either don't work or I'm clueless how to perform. Immediate help would be appreciated as I have no cellular service as of right now, Thanks
 
what version

of firmware are you using 3.0, 3.0.1, 3.1, 3.1.2 redsn0w works for 3.0 & 3.0.1 purplera1n works for 3.0 otherwise you need the jb tool for that version og firmware and there is no unlock above 3.1 right now.
 
When did you buy this 3GS and what firmware is it on? Redsn0w and Purplera1n only work on 3.0.x -- if you have 3.1 or above you'll need to use Pwnage Tool or Blackra1n.
 
Hey, my firmware before the reset was 3.0.1. I was resetting the phone because I started getting terrible battery life. I was trying to restore with 3.0 and not 3.0.1
 
you can't restore your 3G S to anything but the newest firmware. you need to upgrade to 3.1.2 and jailbreak with blackra1n or pwnage tool.
 
But I need to unlock it. I'm on T-Mobile and I heard you cannot unlock on 3.1, correct?
