Easier...definately redsn0w .0.7.2 (either for Mac or Windoze) It's just about idiot proof.
Be sure and back up you phone both before and after upgrading to 3.0
When using redsn0w, don't install Icy, some are having trouble with it
After JB, use Cydia to get Ultrasn0w.
iClarified has a full tutorial, and there are others.
Get one, read it and follow directions to the letter.
Hit the "SYNC" button in iTunes....
Also, you mention you are on T-Mob.
Don't forget to disable 3G before running Ultrasn0w (as T-Mob doesn't support 3G on iPhone, or so I have read)
Don't listen to these guys! Pwnage tool is the best way to go if you have a mac. I used it and it worked perfect! I tried redsnow first and it didn't work do to too many bugs. Use pwnage tool it has an easy step by step guide to help you get your device jailbroken.
So do i need to disable 3g before I start the entire process?

where will these files be saved? how can i access them - i cant see anything new on my itunes
What type of errors were you getting w/ redsnow? I get an error 10 when I try to restore using 3.0 w/ iTunes.

They're saved somewhere in your itunes folder. You dont need to acess them.
Once you restore and jailbreak your iphone it will then ask you when you plug it into itunes if you want to setup as a new phone or restore from backup created on 6-23-2009 etc....
Choose restore from backup to put back all your settings and contact numbers.

Its pretty simple after you jailbreak and install ultrasnow thru cydia.
There was a few issues setting up internet acess and MMS messanging and putting the right settings for Tmobile but once you set them up you're good to go.

Trying to hack my iPhone 3G with a Mac running OSX 10.5.6 i have to say neither solution is idiot proof.
OSX does not let me enter DFU mode and i would have to install a lot of extra stuff or beg one of my Windows-using friends to let me install hacking software on his PC to make it work.

Seriously? There are lots of threads on this, no need to bump TWO old ones.
With a 2G you can go to the dev team blog and read what they say. I'm pretty sure you can just update to 3.1.2/3 and use Redsn0w or blackra1n.
Someone else can probably confirm.
I used PwnageTool last night. I had previously been jailbroken on redsn0w. I had a few problems with it. Personally, I found it a bit buggy. I'm hoping Pwnage is a bit better.
PwnageTool will preserve your baseband (irrelevant to owners of 2G phones) and allow you to customize the system partition size (probably unnecessary). Other than that, I know of no reason to prefer PwnageTool to redsn0w.
