In a quest to find a great desktop, I'm trying out the late 2015 iMac 27in retina, 4Ghz. It's a great computer, with a fantastic display, but the idle fan speed is too loud at 1200rpm for my silent office.
I don't mind the noise when it's working hard, but late at night or doing some simple browsing, the noise shouldn't be there.
I have managed to reduce fan speed to 1000rpm using Marius' methods mentioned here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7308764?tstart=0. The temperates at idle are good, nearly everything is below 40, and the noise is significantly better.
But the downside of using this method with the 'Macs Fan Control' app is it is quite limited and you have to define when the fans should spin up (see screenshot below). As it hijacks the SMC, it will also not take into consideration things such as high GPU temps.
Has anyone found a better solution?
