Hello, bought my iMac 27 "for a few days ago, however, I have discovered an annoying problem last night. When I lower the brightness 2-3 dots from the highest so begins a buzzing sound, which is extremely annoying, to sit with full brightness all the time makes my eyes start to hurt after a while against white backgrounds / webpages.

Have talked to Apple and the store where I bought the computer, they can take it back and send the repair but when it becomes lost in just over 1 week, which I am not so keen on.

Now to my question, is there any software for Mac that allows one to change the brightness? If there is so it may be worthwhile to test if it makes any difference.

The problem occurs when the graphic card goes over 46 ° C, but no buzzing sound below that..

Grateful for answers.

EDIT: Found a sollution!! So for those with this problem, use : http://www.charcoaldesign.co.uk/shades - works like a charm and i dont have the buzzing sound! =)

Your iMac should not be making any noises at all when you lower the brightness level. I'm waiting on a new i7 iMac and if it had any such problem I would send it back to Apple immediately, but that's just me.

I know it sucks to wait.

Shades doesn't actually change the brightness level but rather applies an overlay with transparency to simulate reduced brightness.

No it should not make any noises and i want to go back to store for repair but i cant be without my iMac for over 1 week cause i need it for work.

Going on vacation soon, then its perfect if i leave it in store for repair, so shades will have to do it until then :)

I see, and of course I was only offering my 2 cents. However, I'm very glad to hear you're merely delaying it and not considering overlooking it. :D

You have one full year to get it done and if you haven't already done so I also highly recommend extending it to 3 years with Applecare but that's another story. lol

I can't wait to get mine!

Yeah, and thanks for answering, got applecare so i got until 2012-11-14 to get it done ;)

Enjoy your new iMac when you get it! The screen is really a beauty!
Take care!

if you just bought it a few days ago, why would you even consider getting it fixed? just return it and replace it with a brand new machine.
