Reduced screen brightness in iOS11?

Hi,

After downloading the first PB of iOS11 on my 6S Plus I noticed the screen was substantially darker. Today I am running the latest PB and the screen seemed rather dark ( outside at the time). I did an experiment and turned off auto-brightness on that phone and iPhone 6 Plus running iOS 10 and set both to max brightness. The iPhone 6 is easily twice as bright as the 6. Is this a phone or OS issue?

OMG you saved me with this! I thought I was going crazy. I kept sending bug report after bug report and saw no signs of this getting fixed. Somehow it got activated in mine also. I would've NEVER done something like this lol.

It was even doing this weird "stepping" from original light sometimes, back to dark. Thought I had a busted iPhone or something.

Seconded... And heartily!

Since Beta 4, I kept manually inching up the brightness in Control Center only to notice my screen dim again a short time later, like it was actively pushing back. I've never touched Reduce White Point in Settings, but it was activated. Problem instantly fixed!

I thought that was an iPhone 7 thing because people have said since the iPhone 7 has a brighter screen, the phone will flash back to dark to prevent screen damage

I too had sent bug reports, but today my screen was so dark I was determined to get to the bottom of it.

If I hadn’t found this soloution I was going to backup and restore to iOS 10 to see if that fixed it. If not I was off to the local service agent.

Luckily I found this setting, I could just imagine my embarresment handing over my “faulty phone” only for them to show me this fix ( if they know it)!

I just looked it up and Reduce white point was apparently introduced in iOS 7. Never used it, don’t think I have even seen it before and I thought I was quite up with iOS settings!

PSA: Auto-brightness has been moved to Accessibility in the latest Beta. I’m not a fan. I find that auto-brightness tends to lag, and disabling/enabling quickly would get it back in shape. Now I’ll have to dive deeper in the Settings menu to do so, since there is no Force Touch option for it in Control Center.

Now I’ll have to dive deeper in the Settings menu to do so, since there is no Force Touch option for it in Control Center.

I have Launcher on my iPhone and used that for quick access to various settings that I wanted to change frequently. Unfortunately in iOS11 Apple have removed this function. I hope it comes back or that the developer is able to find a work around ( again ).

Disabling auto brightness and reduce white point did not fix the issue with dim screen on a 10.5 iPad. I even turned off true tone, and the screen is still quite bit dimmer than even an original iPad Air. Downgrading back to iOS 10 restored the full screen brightness.

i just installed 11.8 on my wife’s 6s plus and the screen starts bright then automatically dies down regardless of setting. I checked white point and auto brightness and both are turned off. It seems like it works at full brightness for about 4 to 5 minutes after a reboot then defaults back to a lower brightness even though the settings say full brightness. Jumped it back and the brighter screen was restored.

It's a very significant reduction in brightness by default even thought it can be changed in accessibility, I was already experiencing poorer battery performance at the capped brightness, it seems it'd be horrible battery performance we if tweak the white point setting.

Have noticed this too. My 6S screen is considerably dimmer at full brightness. It was hard enough to see the screen when outside before, now it is basically impossible.....

Turning off the 'Reduce White Point' solved the issue though

While using my phone the screen suddenly got dimmer. I could barely see it in the sun. The slider in control center and in brightness settings would only go half way up. I could dim it all the way down but when I slid up it would stop getting brighter at half way, but the slider would go all the way up.

Was your phone hot from external temp/sun exposure? I know occasionally when I get in my car, that’s been sitting in the sun and very hot, my phone display will dim until the A/C cools things down.
