I found a few threads about this, but it confused me more than anything. I have a WD Mycloud home NAS (I will be changing that soon) WD recently released an app that supports the M1, but to make it work it requires me to change the security to reduced. What are the downsides to doing this?

Not much as long as it is just allowing kexts. By definition anything running at the kernel level reduces your security because the whole OS is exposed. Unless you don’t trust the third-party making the tool because of malicious intent or egregious bugs, I wouldn’t worry about it too much. Reducing security levels beyond that needed for loading kexts is more problematic. (This why they are only available via the command line.)

Well I changed the security settings to reduced and everything seemed to run like crap. I ended up raising the security level back up and continue to not really use the mycloud home as anything but inconvenient storage because the web interface is junk.

Interesting. What problems did you run into? I've been running with reduced security for kexts for months without any problems. I'm using a kext from Caldigit that lets me eject all eternal disks from the dock at once. It's not strictly necessary so if it caused any problems I could easily live without it but it has been fine so far.

This would not be due to reduced security but maybe the System Extension or another reason.
I am running with reduced security to support an audio HAL plugin and have had no trouble. As long as you watch what you install it should not have impact.

Everything just ran slow, I had to restart several times to get my mail client to load. Mostly the speed, the system extension I was using (I think that's what its called) was so Western Digital Discovery would work and mount my NAS properly.

Sounds like it created havoc with disk access.

I'm guessing so. When I switched back and uninstalled it things are back to normal, stupid mycloud home junk.
