So, now we swipe right across the bottom of the iPhone X screen to go back to the previous app, do we need the following return function any more (< Music)?

I'd say you could always go back before as well by double clicking the home button. So in that way it was already redundant. That arrow is more discoverable for most folks I'd imagine compared to the swipe or using the app switcher. What is redundant imo is the swipe for camera on the lock screen. Pressing the very visual button at the bottom must be easier.
 
That back to app dunction is as much an indicator as it is an actual function. The indicator part isn't replicated by basic app switcher functionality or shortcut, so from that point of view it still makes sense.
