I have replaced an old hard drive in my G4 and booted from the system restore disk. However, the restore hardware does not see the new disk. I have made sure it was connected properly and the jumper is in the correct place. Does it need to be formatted first? if so how? Thanks

The new hard drive might be formated in a factory default format (maybe Windows FAT32) you will need to reformat the Hard Drive before you can install Mac OS X on it. Use the Disk Utility program through the system restore disc and it will help you easily erase the Hard Drive. Then you can continue with the installation and everything should go fine.kevinL said:

I have four disks from Apple, restore disk 1 of 4, 2 of 4, 3 of 4 and Software install disk. Is the disk utilities on the software disk or on all of them? I did not see it when I booted from 1of 4. Is this basically the same software that is in the Utilities file in the applications folder? I have lost my mouse function (part of reason for reformat) and can't get around inside the menu tree to choose disks or start programs. Any help there?

Are the install discs for Mac OS 9 or Mac OS X? Knowing which one will help a lot. It should say on the front of the disc like: SW(Software) version: 10.3.9.
I believe for Mac OS X it's on the first disc, when you boot up from it to install the OS it will be from one of the drop-down menus. In Mac OS 9 it's called "Drive Setup" in the Utilities folder on the disc.
